Hi. I just picked up a 60 fury with torqueflite and was wondering how fast i can tow it without disconnecting the drive shaft.

How far are you towing ? Pretty much a bad idea, period.
Why not disconnect the driveshaft ? It's easy to do.

Let's be clear. It's not just "disconnect" it is remove from car.

A '60 should have a rear pump, correct? I thought the reason for disconnecting the drive shaft is due to lack of lubrication on the bands? With a rear pump, is that still an issue?

Pretty sure you're right on the money there. Still, towing a car with another rig it's best to stay at the minimum allowable speed, for safety.

then why does the fsm and/or owners manual calls for the removal of the driveshaft for towing longer distances?

The way I'd look at it, is it's easier to pull the shaft now than pulling the trans out later for rebuild.

Perzackly .... too easy to pull it out, and the risks of leaving
it is are too great, in terms of hassle and expense. Why not
pull it ? Once you exercise those threaded parts, they go on
and off like a breeze.

When i flat towed my 57 Dodge for about 200 miles i just disconnected the shaft at the rear end and wire tied it up to the exhaust that's right next to the shaft...The 2nd pump is there more for tow starting or push starting the car than for distance towing it...get it up to about 20mph throw it in drive and the engine will fire up

Safe Towing; With the transmission in NEUTRAL, the car can be towed for short distances at speeds not exceeding 35 mph. To avoid damage, never tow car in any one of the driving ranges. For long distance towing (over 100 miles), disconnect the propeller shaft at rear universal joint. If the transmission is inoperative, diconnect the propeller shaft in the above manner, or tow the car with rear Wheels off the ground.

The rear pump will supply enough oil pressure to the whole transmission in slow speeds, but not in high speeds.

While you guys have covered all the technical issues related to the original question, how about the more esoteric ones?

My question is How fast do you NEED to tow it?

If you're flat towing behind another vehicle I question how safe anything over 25-30 mph would be. Even on a tow dolly - much less on a clamp-on hitch or tow strap - a car that big will get very squirrely at any significant speed.

If you're towing with a wheel or bumper lift tow truck - just take the shaft loose. You already have the car well secured, and high enough in the air access will be easy.

Or just put the dollies on it.

If you're towing long distance rent a trailer - they're cheap compared to the possible downsides that can occur.

Of course nothing beats a rollback . . .

I was referring to shorter distances, Sid, such as across town.

I would look into renting a car trailer, either U-Haul or one of the other truck rental places. If your friend has something capable of pulling the car either flat or on a dolly, it should also be able to handle a car trailer. And for a 5 hour haul it's much safer (and more relaxing) with all 4 wheels off the road.

Depending on where you're at and what kind of deal you can get you can usually rent the car trailer one-way for much less than the cost of having a car shipped.

The rear pump doesn't have the capacity of the front pump (or the two combined) and the released clutches in Neutral have quite a bit of parasitic drag which adds to the wear. In normal operation the clutches are engaged most of the time the car is in motion.

I bought my wagon in southern California. Disconnected the driveline at the rearend, tied it off to the exhaust as mentioned. Put it on a U-Haul tow dolly.
Brought it home to Washington. Sometimes at 70 mph, no problems...

Some of the rental places are pretty picky about what you use to tow with. They will ask what you are towing and with what. If their computer says "no," they won't rent.

No need to remove if you have a way to stow it in place.
