Veteran Posts: 258 Location: Pieksamaki, Finland, Europe | Spotted a 1957 Windsor convertible for sale in Finland. The sales add says it's a Windsor and doesn't open details behind the car. https://www.nettiauto.com/chrysler/windsor/9265358 It has to be a mix of Windsor and New Yorker as all convertibles were New Yorkers (or 300Cs) weren't they? Or just a homemade convertible from a Windsor 2d HT. They came with 3 variations: No trim, side spears, or 2-tone sweep; although I have never seen a Windsor without any trim at all. A trim-less '57 Windsor is pretty rare. However, the '57 Windsor spears are higher up on the car than where he has them. He has them at the '58 Chrysler level. Makes me wonder if the car was originally a '58 Saratoga or Import Windsor. Makes me wonder if the car was originally a '58 Saratoga or Import Windsor. It has to be home-cooked combo because surely no one would take a New Yorker convertible and turn it into a Windsor. Maybe the origins was a stripped convertible body from a hopeless donor car placed on a Windsor frame and dressed up with the Windsor trim and some later model top mechanism? That would not surprise me at all. If this was build in Finland, the legal regulations might have required a certain percentage of the Windsor parts used so the result could be registered with the frame's VIN. I don't think there was convertible Saratoga or Windsor in 1958 either. A good point! The side spear sits lower than it should be, didn't notice that myself. I have seen also 5-6 Windsors with full lenght side spears in addition to this common shorter setup. Maybe all have had Saratoga spears changed later or maybe longer spear has been some special option, maybe dealer installed. I agree that the trim-less ones are rare. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9650 Location: So. Cal | It wouldn't surprise me if it really was a '58 either because many people prefer the '57 features. I've seen more than one '58 Chrysler with '57 tail lights and front end on them. The real question is: What is the current VIN number on the body? That could tell us much more about it's origins. Does Finland really look for the VIN on the frame or did you just mean the VIN tag on the body? I have been unable to find any VIN information on any of my cars' frames when I tried looking for them. It's a matter of luck and often deciphering even if you happen to find it.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9650 Location: So. Cal | Another oddity is the advertised engine size. 5.6 liter correlates with a 342cubic inch. So it could be anything from 339 to 345 cu in. Does it really have a DeSoto hemi in it??? Maybe it really started out as a '57 DeSoto? 5.5 = 336 cu in 5.6 = 342 cu in 5.7 = 348 cu in 5.8 = 354 cu in Edited by Powerflite 2017-11-26 11:04 AM

I have been unable to find any VIN information on any of my cars' frames when I tried looking for them. It's a matter of luck and often deciphering even if you happen to find it. By VIN in meant overall identity of the car, not the actual VIN on the car. There was times in the past when they wanted us to add VIN number to the frame but nowadays just the original VIN tag on the body is enough. But if you have a 1957 or 1958 Windsor hardtop/sedan with a rotten body and want to put a different body style New Yorker convertible body on it, you must document that you don't change too many parts from the New Yorker if you want to keep the Windsor's registration papers and identity. If too much of the parts are changed then also the car's identity changes and in worst case it's treated like a new car when you try to register it. A whole lotta bureaucracy! These regulations have been eased a lot in recent years but this might be an older build when those trims and other stuff might have been important. The placement of the Windsor badge on the tail fin suggests that this might be a 1957 instead of 1958 and if the base has been a Windsor it must be a 1957 because 1958 Windsor used the shorter frame from a Dodge.

Location: Parts Unknown | Note the center latch handle hanging down in the top photo. Not sure what cars used this set up, but 57-59 Mopar convertibles had separate latches on each side. This top frame is from some other kind of car. Another thought .... Outside of a hardcore group centered in Sweden, when one has an old vehicle that is a million miles from a home parts source, the concern for "original" seems to go down significantly. This was especially so before finned cars became more popular. Can't find a convertible ? Make one ! Let's have a look at the frame under this thing. The X-member will tell us a lot.

Veteran Posts: 258 Location: Pieksamaki, Finland, Europe | I think this is the same Windsor again. Now it has gained a 300C makeover, new interior and upholstery. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9650 Location: So. Cal | It looked better as a Windsor. In fact, he would have been better off keeping it as a '58 Saratoga (Import Windsor). Maybe even convert to '58 New Yorker trim if desired. Would have looked great. That's my opinion anyway. Now it's a mishmash of parts '58 Windsor, '57 300C, '61 300G, '70's drivetrain, '63 Chrysler and retina burning '70's Corvette yellow.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 403 Location: California | Wow! I think I’ve just seen my least favorite color combination. Taxi cab yellow and clown shoe red You guys who said Ronald McDonald hit the bullseye. I could almost smell French fries and egg McMuffins looking at the photos. I personally think it looked better as a windsor too. The color combo is the biggest detractor though.

In this photo, it seems to be saying "Won't somebody please kill me. Kill me now. This is too humiliating" I can hear it too, one of the ugliest color combos I've ever seen. Once while cruising thru the heath (really remote!) I spotted a 58 Edsel 4d ht. It was a low mileage car with a heavenly original seafoam interior but painted a bright purple/bright green twotone I talked with the owner and couldn't hide my disgust about that.
