Expert Posts: 1267 Location: San Antonio TX | I'm not old enough to know myself, but I am curious about when the value of Forward Look cars began to go up siginificantly. Did the prices just explode or was it a slow climb?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9883 Location: So. Cal | I remember that it seemed to take off in the late '90's to early 2000's. During that time all the '75 and older cars went up in price quite a bit - especially E-bodies, but not much for A-bodies. Some cars continued to go up even through the 2008 dump, but most prices took a dip and somewhat leveled out or went up much slower after that. The cars that have continued to go up at a fast rate beyond that are the '68-'70 Chargers, '59 Dodge and Christine cars. '57-'58 & '60 Chryslers and DeSotos have been more expensive for many years, but they haven't been increasing at as fast a rate as those other groups. 300 letter cars seem to be decreasing in price lately, or at least haven't made much change since 2008. Lancers & Valiants are almost the same price they were in 1995!

Location: Parts Unknown | Up through the mid 80's, finned cars were still considered repulsive junk by most people and values reflected that. In 1988, a friend with a very nice 300H asked me how much he should price it at and I did a little looking around and was astonished at what others had been selling for right about then. I told him "ten", so he put eleven on it, expecting some haggling, but instead had half a dozen guys beating down the door for it. It was about this time I decided to clear out my stock of finned Buicks and was shocked at the interest and money involved. A few years before I could not have given them away.

Prices in 2016 are 589.7% higher than prices in 1968. In other words, $100 in the year 1968 is equivalent to $689.68 in 2016, a difference of $589.68 over 48 years.

Veteran Posts: 228 Location: fulshear texas | it's funny when you stop think about the past. in 1984 I was 14 years old looking for a car to fix up. there was a guy in my neighborhood with a 68 firebird. it has cragars, Muncie 4 spd, 12 bolt rear end. the car needed some work but was pretty solid and complete. the guy wanted 900 bucks for it and took a little less than that. people now tell me "man I woulda bought that"! hell I was making 3.35 an hour and mowin yards for 15 bucks. it might as well been 9000. then ebay and the world wide web came along which really changed the game on selling cars. I think autotrader and hemmings was the only way things got sold on a national level before. now with the click of a mouse you can bid on stuff all over the place. ever changing world....
