I'm looking for some help reassembling my constant control power steering shaft and column. Unfortunately my body shop failed to take notes when it was disassembled. I've gotten as far as driving out the roll pin where the shaft meets the box as they also forgot to add the copper grounding strip. Now that the shaft is in I have the column cover itself, 1 lock ring, bearing, 1 cone, 1 flat washer, 1 spring and 1 nut.

Can anyone tell me the correct order of assembly and if I'm missing anything?

Thanks a million!

Thanks for the information I have those pieces except for the top snap ring . I don't have a snap ring for the top and there is no groove in the shaft for it. The original request for information was for 58 plymouth. Mine is a 59 with power steerinrg. Could the 59 be different from the 58? John

Thanks Ttotired!! Hopefully this is the same. I see your pic is from a 60 manual. If so I was way the hell off on my guess! LOL

Did this work for your '58 ? I have a '59 Dodge and LOST the photos I took during disassembly! :-( If I try to install with the spring in the location shown in the '60 diagram, no amount of force on the steering column will collapse the spring enough to get the splined shaft (tube) to poke thru the column far enough to put on the topmost snap ring (or steering wheel). In fact, my recollection is that the spring is sandwiched between the steering wheel and the bearing. Even that way I am having a hard time, because tightening the steering wheel pushes it too tightly up against the column. I am at a loss as to why I cannot get the tube to stick out of the column enough. Everything is collapsed together as much as possible. the column jacket is bottomed out against the steering box.

The '60 diagram above was a no go. I have a different style cone washer and ran into the same issue you did when trying to install it in that order. Came across what appears to be the correct assembly order in this thread... http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25880&...

Check out the pictures posted by Fanbladeus. The third pic he posted shows the assembly order quite clearly. NOW... I'm still having an issue where the column slides up and down 1-2/16 of an inch with the snap ring in the top groove. As a result my wheel is rubbing on the edge of the painted column and there's all kinds of play between the shaft and bearing. I pondered whether or not the top most snap ring should be in the center "unused" groove you've pictured but don't think I can compress the cone washer into the bearing far enough. My best guess at this point is that the outer painted column cover isn't quite down on the gear box far enough. If I can slide it down far enough to raise it up a hair more that may do the trick. Just not sure so will try and report back. The assembly order I'm trying is as follows... Lower snap ring-outer column with bearing-cone washer-flat washer-snap ring-spring-steering wheel. I torqued the wheel nut down to 40lbs as that's the spec I found in the manual. Starting to wonder if that is wrong as well. What a mess this is....

BTW fivespeedV8, can you post pics of the parts you have? Washers, cones and how your bearing sits in the column? I found it odd that the bearing is exposed on the top side with no larger diameter washer to cover it. Thanks!

AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE!!!!!!!! LOL. That did it alright!!!! The outer column itself moved further down closer to the gear box with some persuasion. That raised the shaft up closer to the driver a hair more. The snap ring goes in the CENTER groove above the column bearing, conical washer and flat washer. I cut a piece of pipe, slid it over the shaft and tapped it gingerly to set the snap ring in the center groove. Doesn't take much so be sure and check after each tap whether or not it set.
