Subject: Dual Air / Trunk Air

Location: Under the X in Texas

Does anyone have knowledge of interchangability of the trunk AC condensor /blower units in the FL era? I'd like to take the trunk AC out of this '61 Imperial and put it into a '56 Imperial. Will that work? Dimension problems? Wrong appearance?

Wouldn't it be easier to just go Vintage Air rather than load up the trunk with A/C stuff?

While you are contemplating that option, here is some info for you to consider:

The width of a 56 Imperial is listed at 78.8 inches. The rear track was about 60.4 inches

The width of a 61 Imperial was 81.1 inches . Rear track 62.2 in (so about 2" wider). Might or might not be significant.

The width of a 56 Dodge is listed at 74.6 inches. Track width was about 59.2" (this will become relevant below)

There is quite a lot involved to get the unit in the trunk compared to up front:

The 55-56 A/C Evaporator was the same for the Dodge, Desoto, Chrysler and Imperial (PN 1689 160).

The distance between the wheel well tubs in a 56 Dodge (I just measured mine) is 46.5 inches (i.e. about 12.7" less than the nominal track width). The Evaporator unit (shown below) fits in that space with room for the hoses and pipes.
