Looks like the cars built in west coast had different style of body/cowl tags. There seems to be several topics about decoding these but I thought it could be useful to gather WCD-LA specific details under one topic. Maybe by comparing our cars' codes we could solve also the rest of the tags.

SG = Solex Glass, number below determines which type of solex glass package was ordered

EW = Electric Windows, marking below means the car had electric windows ordered

M1 - M6 = Option package groups. For example M5 package had solex glass so the car had these even the SG is empty.

SEQ NO = ?? sequence number. What sequence is this?

SO = Scheduled build date, first 1-2 numbers are the month, second 1-2 numbers are the day.

NO = ?? number obviously, but what does it mean? Some say it's the following car on the production line, some say that it counts how many cars were built before the same day/month/year. Who knows for sure? Maybe we could just list NO from our cars and try to guess what is the most probably explanation?

MODEL = Tells the car's model.

Chryslers
C751 = Windsor
C76 = New Yorker

BT = Body type. 2d Hardtop, 4d Sedan etc.

Chryslers
1145 = Windsor 4d sedan
1166 = New Yorker 2d HT

DeSotos
3145 4-door sedan
3146 2-dr Sportsman
3148 Shopper station wagon
3149 4-dr Sportsman

PT = Paint. One letter = single color, two letters = Top + Body, three letters = Top + Body + Sweep/Fins/Lower body. For 1957 DeSoto colors check this website (click).

TR = Trim. For Chrysler 1957 interiors check this thread (click). For DeSoto 1957 interiors check this website (click).

SP = ?? Might be a special order?

WCD-LA = West Coast Division, Los Angeles

ADD YOUR CAR'S INFO BELOW. Aand of course other details of the codes, I'll update new infos to this first post as long as editing is possible.

My car is a 1957 Chrysler Windsor 4d Sedan. It has radio, heater, wiper & washer, solex glass all around, automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, left & right fender mirrors, whitewalls, optional sweep two-tone and it has had some kind of a rear window defroster in the middle and speaker grilles on both sides in the back (this is strange). Not sure which belong to a package.

Tag says:

SG =
EW =
M1 =
M2 =
M3 =
M4 =
M5 = 1 = Option package.
M6 =
SEQ NO = 2407
SO = 814 = August 14th 1957
NO = 0199
MODEL = C751 = Windsor
BT = 1145
PT = XRX = Cloud White top, Regimental Red body, Cloud White side sweep.
TR = 055 = Tan Decorated Damask & Beige Saddle Grained Vinyl. (damask is brown with tan decorations, it's not mentioned in decoding guides but seen on the fabric selector books)
SP =

Good idea Heikki.

My '57 New Yorker has:

electric windows, rear speaker, signal-seeking radio, power steering, power brakes, power seats, washer, dual rear antennae, heater, left & right fender mirrors, rubber steering wheel (standard), no hood or fender ornaments, 2-tone white roof only.

The tag says:

SG =
EW = 5 Electric windows, but are other things included in this 5 number?
M1 = 4
M2 = 9
M3 =
M4 =
M5 =
M6 =
SEQ NO = ??902
SO = 1228 = Dec 28th 1956
NO = 0112
MODEL = C76 = New Yorker
BT = 1166 2dr hardtop, sky high rear window
PT = XAA = Cloud White top, Black body and Black side sweep
TR = 026 = Black/White/Gold fabric with gray vinyl
SP =

I will verify all this when I get home tonight. Going off a picture isn't always reliable.

Both my cars have M1=4, but yours doesn't. So what do my cars have in common, that yours doesn't have?

Answer: power seat & dual rear antennae

So M1=4 could be either of these options. My guess is it is probably the power seat.

From previous talks with other '57 owners I would say that all M's might be packages that contain more than one optional equipment and each M can have different number below it so there are plenty of variations. Some of these options might be contained in several different M-packages. But this is not a fact, just a lucky guess. Probably Power seat belongs to "M1=4" but not to "M5=1".

Dual rear antennaes might not be at all listed in factory tag because thay might have been an option meant to be installed by dealer.

I wouldn't think the dual rear antenna would be a dealer installed option. Those holes would be a nightmare to cut without a jig, and that jig would likely ruin the paint job.

That's a good point. I might be thinking too fordist-like here as I know in late 50s Fords rear antennas were usually dealer installation such as spotlights and front fender mirrors and many other dress-ups. Not sure what was the policy on Chrysler Corp.

I will add tag info from my 1958 Dodge Coronet since it may have similar type of codes.

My '58 Coronet has:

tinted windows, standard radio, deluxe interior, power steering, 3 speed auto, manual brakes, heater, left fender mirror, 2-tone plastic deluxe steering wheel (probably packaged with the deluxe interior option), no hood or fender ornaments.

The tag says:

SG = 4 How is this different from an SG=5?
EW =
M1 =
M2 =
M3 =
M4 =
M5 = 1 Why would it have this along with the SG demarcation?
M6 =
SEQ NO = Blank!
SO = 0307 = March 7th 1958 (but not a spring special!)
NO = 5036
MODEL = LD2L = Coronet V8, low price class
BT = 332 2dr hardtop
PT = XXX = All white
TR = 141 = Light Green fabric weave with green vinyl
SP =

I think the number after SG indicates which windows were solex glass as it wasn't just on/off kind of option. I recall seeing some topic about this earlier where SG=5 was meaning all windows had solex and smaller numbers meant some of the windows were standard.

Let me first say I don't know anything about LA built cars but I can decode 57 Detroit built Dodges. Three solex codes were used. --4 was solex glass all around except convertible. --5 was solex glass all around with the top tinted windshield. --7 was solex tint convertible. In other words, a convert could be ordered with plain glass and if "solex" was ordered it only came with a top tinted windshield and solex glass all around.

LA didn't build converts so I would assume --4 and --5 would apply as I listed above.

For 58 Detroit built Dodges it was simpler. --5 was solex windshield only and --7 was solex glass all around and a top tinted windshield.

How this fits with LA cars I don't know but I would have to assume it will fit somehow!

Greg

M1 - M6 = Option package groups. For example M5 package had solex glass so the car had these even the SG is empty.

I know, it's an old thread,
my car tag has M5-1, solex glass (all window), and SG option area is empty (466 solex glass in the build card)
may this info will be useful to someone

I also had a '58 Windsor that was built in LA. It had very little options for a Chrysler. Manual brakes, manual steering, no radio, standard heater, solex tinted glass, large back window. It also had the single spear side trim.
The tag says:

SG =
EW =
M1 =
M2 = 2
M3 =
M4 =
M5 =
M6 =
SEQ NO = Blank!
SO = 0218 = Feb 18th 1958
NO = 0130
MODEL = LC1L = Windsor, low price class
BT = 512
PT = KKK = All gray (not affiliated with the klu klux klan :D)
TR = 011
SP =

Why doesn't the SG slot say anything here?? Did they make the Solex glass standard on all cars with the large back window?? This stuff can be so confusing.

Thanks for resumed this old thread. It is very interesting.
Your speculation about Solex glass that came standard with large back window probably makes sense…
…at least they both have been specified in 1958 New Yorker build sheet as «SOLEX – LARGE WINDOW» in 46x column, shown on the picture below with red line…
Here Detroit-built car Solex glass codes:

465 = Solex Tinted Glass – Windshield Only
466 = Solex Tinted Glass – All Windows
467 = Solex Tinted Glass – All Windows and Shaded Windshield
469 = Solex Tinted Glass – All Windows and Large Shaded Rear Window (2 Door Hardtops Only)

Below New Yorker built sheet, I have posted three pictures of ’58 Dodge Custom Royal, that confuse the stuff still further…
It has options SG=3, M1=3 (probably Power Seat) and M2=3, but Solex Glass column in the build sheet is 467!!!!!
The SG=3 should be SG=7!!!

Another mystery from WCD-LA…
