Well that was time well wasted. (Thanks, that was fun)

I wasn't sure if "Per's" answer to Jay re: 58 Dodges also having hemi's (as well as 361's) was correct. I thought they were done with hemi's with the 325 in the 57 being the last Dodge hemi until the mid-1960s.

?

Wrong carbs, wrong exhaust manifold, GM master cylinder, and NOT regal lancer colors. Seems like wasted space in the video. :/

If this guy is restoring all Leno's cars, wonder how many are incorrectly put together?

Wow. Dude. You missed some things. Like the alternator and the disc brakes. Heaven forbid that a car both goes, stops and charges better than original.

Many of Jay's cars are not restored to factory conditions, they are *improved* with modern amenities including radial tires, disc brakes (often Wilwood) and A/C (often Vintage Air). Nobody ever claimed that Jay's cars were Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance level cars.

Considering Jay says that Pers' 58 Coronet "It was just the biggest pile of crap I'd ever seen", I think Per's work is fantastic. Better than crushing it to make steel for Hyundai's.

Per is a very good friend of mine. He is never really comfortable on camera -- most people aren't. I don't think he was trying to say that '58 Dodge's had hemis... just agreeing with Jay that Dodges of the era had them while the cameras were rolling. Per knows his forward look mopars -- he also owns a Fuel Injected 300D and a '58 New Yorker Town & Country. I've been helping him build the '58 Dodge when I can, and lending moral support when he gets frustrated with it. The car is being built to be Per's daily driver. It's a mild custom and is stunning in person. The color scheme was inspired by the Regal lancer... not an exact copy. He just liked the colors. The paint is perfect. In fact, he had to paint it twice because he had a small flaw on a fender, re shot the fender twice and couldn't get it to match... so he repainted the entire car.

Per is a perfectionist, but he is also a realist. Since paint and body work is what he does for a living, he wanted to make sure that the car was representative of his high quality work. Since he is going to drive it daily, he installed modern brakes, an alternator, a new radiator, LED bulbs in all four taillights so people can see them easier (he got rid of the back-up lights), and other upgrades as he saw fit. It is HIS car, after all.

The negative comments are ridiculous and sad. Per is the most kind-hearted and generous person I know and the negativity aimed at someone who is building a car to DRIVE is just awful. He is also getting national exposure for forward look cars. Yet he is still bashed.

The car will be at the CPW Fall Fling in Van Nuys, CA on October 28th if you want to see it in person. If you don't like what he has done and have nothing supportive to say, keep your opinions to yourselves.

That's a great philosophy.........not. Both criticism and adoration should be welcome on all car forums.

I think he's doing a good job, I don't think he is meaning this to be a full original resto... he owns the car he can do what he wants :P

Its just weird someone is actually restoring a FWL car. its really rare to see one at all. I mean he could be doing a "57 chevy"... yawn.

So stop bitching he doesn't spend 24*7 on FWL.net studying...

Per is a good friend of mine too. Great guy as Aaron says and he does excellent work and is very knowledgeable with these cars. He is currently trying to put the EFI system together on his 300D to get it working with mostly original parts. Not an easy task by any means. He bought his Coronet only about a year or two before I did and his is far better than mine may ever be. He decided to build a lowly Coronet so he wouldn't feel obligated to build it "correct" with only original parts. You can blame his wheel choice on me! He saw the wheels on my Coronet and decided to do the same with his.

Criticism is useful if it is relevant and offered in a positive way. Criticizing a full-on custom (for instance) because he didn't use original wheels is pure stupidity. But then again, everyone needs to be able to accept a certain amount of criticism without crying about it too. That's part of being a grown up.

What service does straight criticism provide to members of a car forum? Posting things like "this is a list of what is not 'correct' about your car" and "I question the quality of your work" do NOTHING to add to this community. It's not constructive at all.

I CANNOT STAND IT when people get on this forum to bitch about how incorrectly restored a car is. I'll hear it with my car too when it's done. I have disc brakes, electric radiator fan, alternator and even fuel injection in my Imperial. Bottom line is, the car was a parts car at best and I dove into it anyway. It will be back on the road again soon, and I will put miles on it, rather than the barn collapsing on it had it stayed where it was. Anybody that puts a FL look back on the road is ok in my book.

If he's building the car for himself , it's up to him , but if leno's cars are to be shown as a representation of a restored car in a museum where the public and other people building or wanting to restore there car can see them , it really needs to be as close as possible to original, in the video leno does not seem to know much about the cars that are being built , wonder how much influence he has on them ?

Well said and so true.

Also not in Leno's case and many many other people but doing a full period correct restoration can get quite expensive and out of reach for some.

Aaron and Powerflite --
You might tell Pers that my Big-Tailed Beast ('60 Fury 2-dr H/T) takes umbrage with he and Jay saying that '59 was the last year of the big fins. The Beast's are not only a year newer that any in the 1959 model year, but I believe them to be the highest of any FLK car. Perhaps they were taken in by the Plymouth sales spiels that called them "Stabilizers." Besides, Jay himself has a 300G so he should know the fins stayed through '61, even on Dodge.
The only problem I have with Leno's stuff is that he gets some bad info from his high-priced "experts" and when he presents some of it on his show, the vast majority of viewers look at it as the 21st century edition of Moses descending from Mt. Sinai. But I do like what he does with his cars -- they are his and it's his money.

I have not posted on this forum for a very long time because too many haters for changing
from the original design. You can still keep the essence of the original vehicle and add safety and
performance, reliability and fuel economy, etc. I already have more invested in my car than it is worth.
Anyone that attempts to keep a vehicle from becoming a new car (THE CRUSHER) and preserving it for
future generations has my respect.

Adds nothing? It gives an alternate point of view as opposed to everybody marching in lockstep as you seem to advocate.

It's not constructive at all.

Aaron

Well, you know what they say about opinions. Yours is, plain and simple, an advocacy for censorship.
