Hi
I already asked this question to an Australian members in other thread, and I had great feedback and info. But, I have some more questions regarding a shipment of a used radio to Australia.

My original question was about sending a radio from the US to Australia. I was informed that anything under $200.00 is no problem. The question I have now is based on shipping cost. Is the shipping cost included in the $200.00?. Also, would it be possible if I sent a much high valued radio and claim its value at $30.00 + $80.00 shipping. Would Australian customs see this as a credible deal?

I posed this question based on my experiences with German customs, who are literally detectives regarding imported parcels. We have had so many issues with shipments into German that I would like to know any details for the Australian counterparts. This will help me to assess how best to ship a radio to an Australian customer at a minimum cost.

Thanks a lot
Denis

Hi Denis,

I'm not sure what the $200 is about but $1000AU is allowed before we have to pay taxes etc. So the product and the freight all have to be under $1000AU. Australia was looking at lowering the threshold from $1000 to $20.00 but that was because of retailers here started crying (They have been ripping us on prices for years) We can pay up to 3 times the amount on any appliances etc over here. The head of the retailers has a chain of electrical appliance stores and is filthy filthy rich but apparently he speaks for the low income earners!!! He is a dog and winds our govt up so they have to do something..

They haven't lowered the threshold here yet so still $1000AU. It will come into play July 2018.

Yes, Matt thank you very much for the information. I forwarded to my costumer and I'm waiting to see what she is going to do.
The box customs declared value is pretty much the amount of the insurance attached to it, so reducing the value of item pretty much left the parcel with out insurance.

Again, thank you very much and I will keep you guy updated.

The customer finally got the radio last week, he asked for my phone number to fill up some customs papers, but I don't have any details yet.
Do to insurance issues I had to declare the full amount of the radio which was five times the original $200.00 but I detailed very clear the work i "performed" so was not over the $200.00

The radio looks awesome with the new Chromed bezel.

I will updated the post once i know more about the customs details.

Denis I totally don't understand. I'm well versed on bringing items into Australia because I do it every week from Europe and US and I'm just a little lost.. He has the radio or it has arrived in Australia? What is the mentioned $200 for? The insurance for the radio was for $1000 but the customer paid you $200 for the work done? Where did the radio come from?
If he has the radio then there should be nothing else to do..
This is the process-

You send goods and declare how much and what goods are
Package arrives in Aus then goes to customs
Customs then checks package and amount
If under $1000AUS package then goes to post, then to customer
If over $1000AUS then customs send the receiver the invoice to pay tax then after payment will release package.

This is on the Aus Customs site-

Things you buy over the internet will have the same rules, duties and screening processes applied as any other import..
You need to know that:
For goods that are worth equal to or under AUD1,000, there are no duties, taxes or charges to pay.
For goods that are worth more than AUD1,000, you will need to fill out a special form called an Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges.
You will need to pay duties and taxes on some goods (like tobacco or alcohol) regardless of their value
Certain types of goods are not allowed to be brought into Australia, or else need special permits.

Hi Matt
Let me try to explain better.
Following your $200.00 advice, I made an invoice for $198.00 for “repairs” to the radio, the discrepancy is that the actual value of the radio+the chrome work is way above that value, and that is the value that you have to declare for insurance in case of lost or damage.
Depending of the customs, sometimes the guide for them regarding to the duties to collect is my invoice ($200.00) but some of them (like Germans customs) they collect based in the total value of the product $1000.00
In my invoice I noted that the radio came from Australia, and we did some repairs and we are sending it back, this works perfectly with the Germans before. But the reality was that the buyer purchased a finish converted radio from me on Ebay and I added the re-chrome of the bezel plus the shipping, so I was hoping they buy my story.
I still don’t know the results, unfortunately my customers sometimes take a bit in respond, but I hope he will do it soon.

Yes Matt, this is a DeSoto radio I made for Carlisle 2017, since every year I take a converted radio to add some music to the FL tent at the car show.

Unfortunately I couldn't have any confirmation from Dave regarding the tent availability for this years so I left it at home and sold it on Ebay.

What he is trying to say is if you want to insure an item for what its really worth if it gets lost , you cant declare the part at a false lower price , as the alarm bells will go off at customs. He is just trying to cover himself by insuring it , but that's the trade off in hoping it arrives safe ..

I have been putting false prices for years , but if you declare it as $200 value you can only insure it for $200

Its a messy one here as he has done work on the radio even though its only worth $200 as a core .

Yes James, it will be a lot easier for me to let my customer deal with the customs, but I feel a responsibility to help them to save money and I always do my best, so my customers don't pay anything at the custom office.
I faced this dilemma myself when i was living overseas and sometimes the customs cut was the biggest invoice of the whole transaction making my restorations impossible.

Yeah but someone earlier had told Denis the threshold is only $200 which would of complicated things because the threshold is $1K. That's what confused me.. So if the customer did buy it for $1000, it still could of been declared as $1000 and it would go straight to his doorstep with no customs intervention. All AUS dollar though.

LOL could of wrapped it in birthday paper and marked it as a gift then insured it.

I've been stung ones. I sent something to the UK but didn't declare it as a gift. The gift was $90.00 but the tax I had to pay British Post for them to release it was $50!!

It's interesting buying stuff from overseas...

I buy a few things from a Chinese group and sometimes the parcel arrives marked as a 'gift'. What a load of rubbish.

I guess this is done due to their lack of knowledge of the system. It's certainly not something I would have done.

In some countries marked as a "gift" it is not enough, it is easy to anybody at the customs office with an internet connection to know the price of almost anything today. As I said, I will do anything my customer want me to avoid customs fees. I don't owe anything to the Australian customs or any other customs; I’m 100% on my customers side. Actually one of my customers in Germany had to take a picture of him with the radio before send it to me to the US for conversion as a proof that the radio came originally from Germany.

I remember while living overseas I purchased a set of gaskets and ring set from Mitchell Motor parts, I begged him to put a lower price than the real cost, but he refused. When the package finally arrived the customs collect me 50% of the items + 50% of the shipping cost. When I opened the package the rings were not correct for 361cid and the gasket set had one of the cylinder head gasket missing due to bad packing, all this pushed my 61 Newport restoration to the freezer for 8 years . finally I assembled and drove that car 12 years after this insident.
Thank you guys for all the help.
