Mine is long gone. (I know that it was originally a rectangular pad of jute or ?? applied before the upper and lower parts of the trunk lid were welded together. )

This stuff:

Was originally like this (not mine but a local 55 Custom Royal):

yes its applied before the trunk skin is crushed/sealed together... it takes a ton of work but you can get it out of there.

that ebay crap is just some generic overpriced sheet of "stuff"... Its not specific to these cars. Looks like a simple piece of cheap carpet the original was a fiber board of some sort.

Are you looking for concourse? better functionality? You could sound proof it and cover it with a carpet. I will dynamat mine in the "holes" and then put like a black thin carpet over it I think or match the interior with maybe vinyl.

I don't recommend that you remove it. Keeping the frame cushioned to the skin is an important function. Remove it, and you can have noise resulting from the two slapping together. That stuff is put in there for a reason and it is extremely hard to put anything back in between once it is out. Just cut some other material and lay it in to make it look OK, and call it good.

I think he's stating that picture is not of his car? if it is he should keep it. (clean it up and paint)

when I cleaned up my rear trunk lid, I got rid of the rust and painted and it wasn't easy getting out all the little pieces but they wiggled out eventually and I used long thin wire brush head on my
drill to get under the braces. I rust bulleted the whole area inside also.

I would move to a rubber like sound deadener if it was me, but it hard to get it applied.

fortunately it is usually pretty clean under the closed areas. I was able to pry it open gently in areas and get the material out.

I have squares of sound dampening material, I will try slipping that in and removing the backing after slipping it in as much as possible but I will have to do that in
pieces to get under the bracing.

That is correct: I stated that the photo of the trunk with the OE rectangular padding is NOT mine.

Mine had that padding removed before I got the car last year. I have spent some time rust proofing under the braces with various products, ending with Tremclad (Rustoleum) paint. Then I painted the entire trunk.

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63447&...

SO now I would like to put some padding back on the underside of the trunk.

looks great and a good foundation.

Those speakers don't look stock

I would go for some sound deadener, it will work much better than "jute".

If your going for a stock concourse restoration your out of luck.

My 57 dodge trunk looks similar, nice clean slate. I can slide a big piece of sound deadener with the stickem still covered and then under the edges pull back and stick it.

Or just do the areas I can see... it is silver backed so I can glue some nice carpet, fabric on it? vinyl.

dynamat or whatever(they are all the same but dynamat charges double for the name).

Thanks and LOL. This car is never going to be stock concourse.

The other side of those speakers:

I guess I should have listened better. There was an eBay sale (20% off) on March 9th so I pulled the trigger on buying the "Deck Lid "Waffle" Pattern Insulation for 1955-1962 MoPar" from Temecula Valley Mopar (aka ATLAS OBSOLETE MOTOR PARTS)

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Deck-Lid-Waffle-Pattern-Insulation-for-1955-...

They were terrible at shipping and didn't ship until the 16th. But then it arrived quickly yesterday (March 19th - 3 day priority USPS) at my US mail drop. So I went down to pick it up this morning. As soon as I saw the 3"x 3" end of the box, I knew that I was had. Whatever was inside, it was going to be much thinner than I had assumed from the eBay photos

The material reminds me very much of tar/paper roofing "felt". It is very thin. Maybe 1/16", 3/32" at most. Made by R.E.M.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY, in my opinion.

I should have searched out some thin grey indoor/outdoor carpet locally like I have purchased before, 6 ft x 8 ft for $20.

Live and Learn. Too soon old/too late smart

Yeh, the finest roofing paper ever. LOL.

I contacted the seller and I can return it. Naturally I will lose the shipping (both ways) but at least I won't have roofing paper on the underside of my trunk.
