Just putting the handles back in a 59 Dodge. Is there meant to be a gasket or seal between the handle and the body to stop water getting into the door?
The spare doors don't have one and I don't see any reference in Gary Goers listing.

The doors are not water proof and were never meant to be.

I checked the 1268 page 55-58 Mopar Parts pdf and found no evidence of a gasket either in the diagrams or the parts listings. When I temporarily removed the driver's door handle on my 56 Dodge, there was no gasket.

Check this 57-58 Door Handle Part number listing for yourself (I could be wrong) :

The door handle gasket would not stop water getting into the door because water usually gets there through the window opening as the cat whisker there doesn't hold up much water.

Door being not waterproof is why there are plastic sheet between the door and the inside door panel and the drain holes at the bottom of the door.

Yes, but the gasket prevents you from digging into your new paint. I recommend just making some out of thin rubber sheet.

Thanks guys. I figured since I couldn't find any reference that the gasket didn't exist.
I'm having a go at cutting one out of old inner tubes, as Powerflite says, just to protect the paint. My first example looks like s**t so it's in the bin and try again tomorrow.

Hmm... that was two years ago. I am now working on the last of the 4 drs on my 56 Dodge and now I am rethinking the need for a gasket under the "fridge" handle. PNs for the 56 Dodge (and Plymouth) door handles are 1682512 (right) and 1682513 (left).

A gasket would not keep water out of the door but it would stop the handle from digging into the door skin when the two nuts that hold the handle to the door are tightened.
