Elite Veteran Posts: 977 Location: Sydney, Australia | I thought the 57-58 Chrysler family were the start of the extravagant fins by Exner Snr and other companies followed the huge fins. Sometimes called the Father of Fins or the King of fins. Didn't he also say they were functional???

Just because it was the first to incorporate something doesn't mean that they inspired the craze. When something is hot, you act on it. If you don't think it is hot, you ignore it. Given that a design cycle occurs typically 3 years before production, the cars that would influence the '56 models would be from '53. If people were so impressed with the '49 Caddy, why didn't we have a fin craze in '52? The answer is because people in general, were not that impressed by it ..... yet. Mopar and Packard were the companies that really ignited the fin craze with their '56 models, but who were they inspired by? It is clear that Packard played a big role since the front end of the '55 Plymouth is practically copied over from them. Also, 3 years before the Mopar fins came out, the '53 Packard Clipper came out with a mini chrome fin that was gorgeous. I don't think it is any coincidence that the '55 CRL practically copied the fin design from this car. So I would give a lot more credit to Packard and Mopar than I would to Cadillac. Sure, Cadillac came out with the first, limp, boring fin, but the companies that should be given credit for making it into something worth talking about is Packard and Mopar. Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | agreed, it caught my eye because it looks great. What always bugs me about the Imperial is why didn't they wrap that bumper all the way... it has that gap in the front fender behind the bumper... kind of awkward looking spot. Like someone forgot something.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | If it were mine, I would just pull that front bumper back about 3 inches. Would do a world of good for the way it looks. Same with the '56 Plymouth front bumper. Of course, you would have to do some crafty metalwork to make it work.
