The blower motor in my 63 Imperial seems to speed up as the engine RPM speeds up. This car is equipped with a 55 amp alternator. The blower speed is set to high when this occurs. I have not tested it in the two lower speeds. I have bypassed the old corroded fuse box and added a modern fuse holder with the appropriate sized fuse. I don't know if this is a common occurrence or if this is something that I should be worried about.

Well that obviously means that the voltage that the blower motor is seeing is increasing with engine RPM. This means that the alternator output is not very regulated. Suggest that you test the voltage output at different RPMs and then consider replacing the voltage regulator.

Just been through that with an alternator on my 93 Audi S4. Ended up replacing its voltage regulator.

One very handy tool for troubleshooting issues like this are these voltmeters that plug into your cigarette lighter. They can be had for as little as $5. Of course, you can use a regular multimeter, but these things are convenient and you can watch the actual voltage as you drive around. I have a few of them.

Some voltage fluctuation is normal, but if the voltage rises much above 14 Volts, something isn't right.

Don't be surprised if you find the measured voltage drops below 12V at idle and increases to 14V+ as the engine speed increases. Mopar alternators are notorious for low output at idle.

I think I solved the problem. I grounded the voltage regulator directly to the negative terminal and everything seems fine. I think I will get one of those voltmeters that plug into the lighter socket. Thanks guys!

Any sources besides China?

Thanks Marc. I guess I meant where can I go into a store and buy one and not have to wait 6 weeks to get one from China or go through an auction?

Only one of those links was a Buy it Now with shipping from the US. But it had red LED (picky picky).

Amazon has tons of them for sale. If you have Amazon Prime, you get free 2-day shipping. For a tiny bit more, you can have it tomorrow.

I personally own this one and I really like it. It lives in my Volvo. I like that I can monitor charging amps on my USB devices. I have a tablet that is finicky and doesn't always want to charge. The Voltmeter seem to be accurate within 1 or 2/10ths of a volt which is good enough for what I want it for. The temperature readout is not very useful because the sensor is inside the device, so as it warms up, it will always read higher than ambient.

This one would have a more accurate temperature display as the sensor is external to the device.
