Location: Cochrane, Alberta | Pulled the 354 out of my 58 chrysler today; I have also separated the transmission form the engine.
i want to remove the torque converter so that I can mount the engine onto an engine stand for a rebuild.
I removed the 4 bolts that hold the bottom access plate on and I see where a guy can reach up from the bottom and get a wrench on the nuts that attach the converter to the crank.
Is this what you have to do to remove the converter? It seems pretty risky with the engine hanging on the engine hoist but it looks like you need the height to get in from the bottom if indeed that is the way to remove it.
Any suggestions or tips would be great before I proceed!

Location: Muskego, WI | Yup, that's how it's done. When Chrysler build these cars, the torque converter was attached to the crank before the crank was dropped into the block. Easy for assembly, but a pain when you want to take stuff apart. |

Location: Peoples Republic of Oregon | Yup, use a long 5/8 box-end wrench to break the nuts loose. Then you can spin the nut off with the end of your finger.
The factory guys were not using and engine stand such as what we commonly see/use and they attached the converter to the crank before laying it in the block.
Be very careful when you get to nut #8...the converter is heavy. |
