My 56 Dodge Custom Royal D500 came as a radio delete. In the fall I purchased a ElectroTune ("Town and Country") radio for it and a new surround. I had the radio converted to electronic AM/FM/iPod/Aux/BlueTooth but never got to install it because of a cowl vent issue. Now I am moving towards dealing with the cowl vent and installing the new radio surround. I did the surround install yesterday. I was a bit shocked to see that BOTH the radio delete and the radio surrounds had the same PN cast into them, i.e. 1575 384. According to the parts manual, the radio delete surround should have been 1607 863 so it was surprising to see that the PNs were the same. On closer inspection the radio delete panel has both PNs cast into it, where as the radio surround just has the 1575 384.

Nice of them to cast in the size of the three machine screws that hold the surround into the dash (10-24).

Makes perfect sense from a manufacturing standpoint.

There is one casting mold for both parts - the delete mold with both part numbers on it.

When they cast a delete panel they use just the mold, and both part numbers are present.

When they cast a radio surround they install a "plug" in the mold that makes the hole.

SO if you put the delete part number in that section of the mold, it isn't there when you cast with the plug in place - Ta-Daa! Radio surround with the part number already on it

If you look carefully you'll notice 4 round impressions where the delete panel is -they are from the attaching hardware for the plug. You'll also see the same sort of impressions around other features that were optional on that panel, such as the black hole to the far left in your photo, and the used hole in the center.
