Expert Posts: 3887 Location: Northen Virginia | This is the build sheet of my 1961 Chrysler export. Unfortunately it is not any information of the dealer number (1800) or the region (18) according to the FCA, this is also a KM/H speedometer car, and what it seems as bumper guards model. if someone can tell me something about it, it will be more than appreciated. Expert Posts: 3887 Location: Northen Virginia | I can't find any missing option in the car not listed by you. However I don't know where the km/h speedometer will be detailed. Also the front bumpers came with bumper guards but that was probably an Argentinean addition. Has clock 229 and wonder what the Taxi option are too. Drive & Instruction?? these car are always a mystery. I also managed to find the VIN buried deep in my archives and the original upholstery sample. Drive & Instruction??. 48 - 9 - Taxi packages & equipment Since Chryslers were not typically used as taxis per se (maybe limos), I would guess that the taxi package was ticked during the ordering because it meant heavier suspension and goodies like bumper guards. But that is just a guess.

But that is just a guess. :) That's what I was thinking, too. I know the roads in Argentina were noted for their roughness back then so a heavy-duty suspension was in order. Got that bit of news through te experience of Kaiser-Willys in the 1955-56 when they shipped the tooling of the 1955 Kaiser to Argentina. One of the upgrades they had to do was using a heavy-duty suspension or their new Kaiser Arabella model would have fallen apart from the pounding. Need to find out exactly what code 489 was all about.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Chrycoman - 2017-08-19 1:16 PM Need to find out exactly what code 489 was all about. Bill: I am shocked. 489 has you stumped?? You have previously listed a lot of taxi codes: "What was in a taxi package? by Bill Watson The 1958 Plymouth order code list (USA) that lists the various items in the Heavy Duty Packages - Taxicab and Police : 399 - Non-Slip Differential - 350-cid V8 only 451 - Heavy Duty Package for 3-speed manual and overdrive transmissions 452 - Heavy Duty Package for automatics 437 - Universal Key Package (Taxicab) 455 - Heavy-Duty Springs and Shock Absorbers 394 - Automatic Dome Light Switch - All Doors (Taxicab) 400 - Fuel Tank - 23 gallons 225 - Vinyl Trim - Seat and Door Panels 609 - City Traffic Carburetor (Taxicab) 359 - Heavy Duty Crankcase Ventilation Package 585 - Battery - 70 Ampere Hour 571 - 30-Ampere generator - city police 572 - 40-Ampere generator - city police (N/A 6 with PS) 574 - 50-Ampere generator - Leece Neville (N/A 6 with PS) 573 - 50-Ampere generator - Bosch (N/A 6 with PS) 378 - Governor (35 to 60 miles) - 6-cylinder only 309 - Handle - Door Pull-To - Taxicab - right rear door Packages 451 and 452 included such heavy duty equipment as springs, shocks, clutch, battery, seat cushion springs, and wheels (14x5*). Taxis also included an economy carburetor and head on the straight-six. Taxi and police cars in this era were fairly unique (at Chrysler) in having optional 15” rims and tires in those days, using a variation on the ’50s Plymouth “poverty cap” that looked like the original but did not have the ship logo. This practice continued until 1969, when civilian C-bodies became available with 15” wheels once again. Bigger wheels were much more common on police models than taxis, but some cabs had these too." Veteran Posts: 143 Location: Atlanta, GA | Bill and others, I too have a 61 Newport that many of you have helped answer questions I have had. Regarding the Shipping Order Number. The second set of numbers in this case is 9399. What does the first 9 designate? Is this a code for the Newport? What codes did the other models have like the Windsor, New Yorker, 300 etc.? Did that carry over to the other C bodies made at Jefferson? If so what were the codes for them?

Bill: I am shocked. 489 has you stumped?? You have previously listed a lot of taxi codes: ....... REF: http://www.allpar.com/squads/taxis.html The problem is the codes change from year to year with new codes added for new options and removed when options are dropped. And more options were added than dropped so the list grew. During 1956-1958 the various assembly plants were transferred from the Divisions to the Automotive Manufacturing Group. AMG began working on getting all car lines to use the same basic list of sales codes that could be used in all assembly plants. The 1959 model year was the first of the corporate sales code lists. The only differences between the car lines were the options unique to that car line. The other big change was having all assembly plants build their own bodies, part of the changes being done for the new unibody models. Also, blocks of codes were shuffled around - Batteries 580 in 1958 moved to 540 in 1961 and Rear Axle Ratios from 550 to 520. The next big shuffles occurred in 1962, 1965, 1966 and the biggie in 1969 when the sales codes switched from NNN layout to ANN. All items were grouped by letter - Engines went from codes in 370 and 380 to codes beginning with the letter E. 21 letters were used - I, K, O, Q, Z were not used. So, the three digit code system had 999 numbers that could be used while the ANN system had 21 times 99, or 2,079 codes. The next overhaul came in 1983 - using all letters - AAA. Or 9,261 codes. So, it is not possible to assume that code 345 in 1958, for example, became 654 in 1961. Just need lists of codes used for fleet, taxi and police sales. Those codes were not generally included in the lists prepared for the regular car buyer.

Yes, the first digit designates the car line / series being built. "9", though, generally meant "Special". This car being an export model may have been given the "9" code as a result. In 1961, Chryslers (Newport, Windsor, New Yorker, 300-G), DeSoto and Dodge Polara were built at East Jefferson. Going to have to start digging through the body tags to sort out the SON by the Body Type.
