Hello, new guy here. I've been looking for a forum like this and looks like I have finally found the right place! While working on the 1957 Dodge 4 door hard top Coronet the threads stripped on one of the the wheel studs for the front left wheel. I'm having an impossible time locating new ones. So far I have tried the local auto parts stores including NAPA. I have also tried Summit, Andy Bernbaum's, and a few others. Summit racing was able to give me the dimensions but they only carry right hand threaded ones. The dimensions are .645 knurl 1&7/16" long 1/2x20 threads. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Dorman products discontinued the left hand studs several years ago. They now only service the lug nuts. Your best bet is to replace them with the right hand studs.

Right hand studs are relatively easy to find, the problem is the serrated area or knurl were the stud attach to the hub, I remember finding the right thread but not enough meet there, so the studs will not bond..

They're for sale every now and then on eBay.

I don't know of a good source of new studs. Hopefully, someone will let us know where one exists. I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere, someone is sitting on a big stash of these. After all, there were so many cars made with these studs.

That said, here's some thoughts:

1. You may find it easier to find a used brake drum and just replace the entire drum. Big M may be a good place to start.

2. Right hand threads are just fine. Chrysler had this "great" idea during that period to put left hand threads on the drivers side wheels with the idea that they would be less likely to unwind if they weren't tightened well. From a theoretical engineering standpoint, it was a good idea. From a practical standpoint, it's completely unnecessary. I've owned a number of FL cars over the years where the drums got swapped and never had any issues. Just keep them reasonably tight.

3. You may be able to run a die over the threads if they aren't that bad. But then again, you probably don't have any left-handed dies. I know I sure don't.

As a side note, when I have my cars serviced, I always make a point to inform the mechanics which stud have left hand threads. Many mechanics, especially younger ones have no idea. I learned the hard way a few years back when getting tires installed.

that is true, never had any issues with regular rh wheelnuts on the drivers side. i always questioned the theory behind it as i think this would make only real sense with a centrally located nut. that said, i changed to nuts that require lubrication and therefore a reduced torque and, surprisingly, i noticed when i checked the nuts after a couple of hundred miles only the left side needed retorqueing....

Thanks for the reply's. I'll look into rock auto today. I did find some drum / hub assembly I think at Mel's Mopar but they where a little pricey.
