Have a look at the screen capture below on an auction that I lost yesterday - it supposedly shows all the bids, including the otherwise hidden ones. Yet there are some issues and missing bids.

When I started bidding with 20 minutes left, there was only the one bid at $19.99. NOT $40 as it seems to show now. I put my max in at $75.03 to be raised automatically as needed.

Immediately after I entered my bid against the 19.99 my bid was automatically raised to 41 (because there was a hidden 40). I get that (sort of). But then my next bid of 61.63 doesn't make sense (to me).

Once we got above my max, I kept probing with increases. Eventually, it got beyond stupid and I quit.

I won a good one the previous day and the part involved in this auction is okay on my car, just not as pretty as the one that was on auction.

Anyway, if you can explain some of the apparent jumps in bids, I would appreciate it.

Because the Minimum bid needed was $19.99.. Although the first bidder clearly put in a high bid of $40.. Once the 2nd bidder enters the next minimum required bid, Lets say $21.99 , The first bidder with his first bid of $40 will then out bid the 2nd bidder by the next required ebay amount,
High Bids only go up by Ebays required minimum amount needed for the next bid..

If that all makes sense to you,, HAHA

Sometimes someone will do a big jump to scare off the other bidder, or to see how serious they are. Or a sham bidder....

I don't get why you would already start upping the price 20 min. in advance?
It's been awhile since I joined in on the ebay-frenzy but I only put in my bid at the last few seconds. I bid the max. I want to pay + a bit more to not feel sorry if I lost it anyhow, depending on the part.

O***L started with a max bid of $40. Then you put in your max bid of $75.03. Then O***L started upping his max bid, and each of his bids that were below your $75.03 will keep upping your current "winning" bid to $1 more than his prior bid.

only way to shop on eBay is "buy it now" or crank your first bid in within the last 10 seconds of the auction.

There is a site that will do your ebay bidding for you. You go there, enter your information and never need to get involved with bidding wars that drive up the price. You buy points there, (20.00 buys 2000 points) and any comfirmed win over $25.00 costs 1 point.

Just enter your proxy bid amount, (what ever your limit is), and item number, and time to bid before auction end. I use 6 seconds. They automaticly do your bidding. (great if your sitting on the can, or something). They will also inform you ahead of time if a higher bid than your proxy is entered on ebay.

Getting a proxy bid takes the fun out of it

I have spent many a night sitting up into the early hours watching an auction come to an end so I can sniper a bid in

If its something you really want, its sometimes hard to hold down the holler when you get it

But as with any auction, it pays to know the average value of what your after so you can set a max bid and if you really want it, then add more, like a $20 switch, put $40, but
be careful of ones that drive the bids up (usually only happens on big ticket stuff)

But yeah, sniper bidding is where the fun is

I respecfully dissagree. I don't miss the staying up late just to try and snipe, only to lose to someone who only bids to win an any cost. Unless you have a lot of time and a lot of money, proxy is the way to go.

Will.

If I must have it and it never comes up for sale, I will put a stupid amount on it, but I only do that at the end so if there is any shill bedding, they don't have to much time to wipe me out

Thats the advantage of using a snype bidding site. My bid goes in 6 seconds before the end of the auction, and I don't have to be there.
