Extreme Veteran Posts: 480 Location: Georgetown Texas | Howdy everyone. Brought home my second D-500 tonight, what a bizarrely optioned car! We have a solid Black with red interior 1958 Dodge Coronet D-500 4dr Sedan, with factory A/C, power steering, exhaust deflectors, Torqueflight and radio. How many 58 D-500 4-door sedans were made? Can't be a whole lot I would imagine. If anyone an decode the data tag, it would be greatly appreciated! Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | 1958 was a transition year with the various divisions replacing their unique sales codes with a corporate system. Changes were made by Plymouth, Dodge and DeSoto during the year. Anyway, here goes - No, it does not appear to have a D-500 engine. The "37" column was for the engine options - 373 - D-500, 361-cid, 1 4-bbl carb, 305-bhp - same engine as standard on 1958 Fireflite 374 - Super D500, 361-cid, 2 4-bbl carbs, 320-bhp 375 - EFI, 361-cid, 333-bhp Since there is no number in the "37" column the engine should be the Red Ram 325-cid Dodge V8. Judging by the photo the engine in there now is a B block of some sort. The engine number could tell us what is there now. The "Schedule" - 1021 05016 - would become the Shipping Order Number by 1960. "1021" is the scheduled build date - October 21, 1957. Body - 333 3 - Dodge 3 - Coronet V8 3 - 4dr Sedan Paint 1AAA 1 - Monotone paint scheme A - Roof colour - Black A - Lower body colour - Black A- Middle / sweep colour - Black Trim - 144 Codes - 293 - Torqueflite 303 - Comes up as power seats (?) 362 - unknown 467 - Solex with windshield 501 - Undercoating 523 - unknown 601 - unknown

Expert Posts: 1906 Location: Ontario, Canada | The option codes stamped on the body plate are not the sales codes. For example, card column 37 is power plants but power plants on the body plate is option 52. 523 is D500. Plate option 303 is front A/C and heater and would be card column 34. 362 is radio accessory group 487 is so lex glass 501 is undercoating 601 is route and I don't know what 1 means Why Dodge did this I have no idea!! Greg Thanks, Greg! Dodge was the hold out in getting all divisions on the same page with codes. Chrysler was combining all assembly plants in one group separate from the divisions. I suspect Dodge Division management did not like the idea of losing control of their assembly plant.
