The cat's whisker on the inner window frame was attached with wire staples. Must have been a heck of a stapler to power through metal as well as the cat's whisker material. I plan on re-using the staple holes in the window frame but I lost one of the four staples (very stiff round wire). Not sure if I can re-use the staples. In any event, I need to figure something out for the missing staple.

Any BTDT's appreciated.

I bought some stainless steel staples from Lowes and inserted them by hand in the existing holes. They work okay, but I've also used stainless steel aircraft safety wire that works just as well. Neither way is perfect, but I haven't found anything better. Trying to re-use the originals has always resulted in some breakage.

I used small black phillips head screws. Drilled some small holes instead of using existing slots.

I use 1/8" countersink rivets from NAPA and use a black sharpe to color the rivet heads- works well

I used the rivets and then took some loose felting and super glued it over the rivets. Covers them and no chance they'll scratch anything.

I did a trial fit with the cat's whiskers that is attached to the door (to deal with the outside of the glass). I drilled 1/8" holes through the cat's whisker and the door (with the chrome-edged whisker at just the top edge of the door - taped into position before drilling). I used 1/8" x 1/8" steel rivets and worked my way from one end towards the other. (Drilling and riveting as I went). Turned out okay(ish). For some reason the cat's whisker crept a bit in the direction I was going (even though the second hole wasn't drilled until after the first rivet went in). Then the last rivet didn't break properly. Probably redo the whole thing tomorrow. Live and learn.

Thanks for the hints. I'll have to see if I can find the countersunk rivets (I just used what came in the Bostick kit).

I said aluminum pop rivets! Alum bodies and alum mandrels. The steel ones pull too hard. That's why it creeped and they occasionally don't break properly.

Ooops. I missed that. No biggy. I have a drill and 120 titanium drill bits. I will drill out the rivets tomorrow and redo the thing with aluminum rivets. The last steel one DID NOT BREAK properly for sure. I also think I may have hurt my chest (19 months out of open heart surgery) a bit because the steel ones need a lot of force. Nothing serious but a bit of pain never the less.

This is a learning exercise and I will be primed up to do the other three doors once I get through this trial drivers door.

Thanks for your input and comments.

Sorry about your intercostal muscle pain! No fun at all!!
The key is alum bodies and alum mandrel. Might not be easy to find. If you can't get them let me know. I Might have a bunch in stock. These guys break with simple hand pressure.

I just bond them in place with a PU adhesive, not as if you need to replace them in a hurry and stops water from going I between the strip and door, there is no distortion from using rivets and no bare steel from drilling holes?

Where were you in May? What is a PU adhesive? Poly Urethane ? Like the black stuff the window shops use to bond windshields in?

Yes that's the stuff, you should be able to pick it up at most diy stores, here's a 3m example

I did a combination of PU and aluminum rivets (I really wasn't confident that the PU would keep the chrome-edged cat's whisker exactly where I wanted it). Except the aluminum rivets don't pull the whisker as tight to the door as the steel rivets.

Upwards and onwards.

Along with whiskers some related specialty clips, they were cheap so I also added staples to my order from Restoration Specialties. (I didn't think of Lowe's, Gary) Not sure if they will work or will be worth the hassle making them work. Interesting other ideas. But for what it's worth:

They also have the clips like this:

Got side tracked by one of my other cars today but eventually got back to the 56 cat whiskers.

The "issue" was the exposed rivets from yesterday's installation.

Solution: Cut some of the "whisker" material off the previous trial strip (the one that moved) and use a single hole paper punch, I punched out "plugs" of cat's whiskers. I attached them to the door, over the rivets. I did two with 3M door gasket adhesive (sticky yellow stuff) and three with black PU sealant/adhesive. Both worked (after I smooshed them into the strip with the flat of a screw driver) but the black PU adhesive might be better because you can't see any overage/leakage whereas with 3M door gasket adhesive you could see a tiny amount of smoosage. (To be cured tomorrow with a black sharpy).

Used the black PU sealant to seal the vent window rubber gasket to the door frame and bridge a small gap between the cats whisker and the vent frame. (Might have been a better way but....)

Still haven't reinstalled the inner window door frame on my driver's door but will be getting to it this week.

In the meantime, I've got the right rear door apart and I have to do the same thing there. In removing the window channels there, I discovered that the cat's whisker on the door was attached with four little clips as shown below. I have since soaked them overnight in rust remover and then painted them with Tremclad (Rustoleum) semi-gloss black and plan to reuse them during the installation of the new cat's whisker (instead of the rivets I used on the drivers door whisker).

I tried using the little OE clips but there position on the new cat's whiskers didn't work. So abandoned that and went back to using 1/8" x 1/4" rivets. Worked fine. I used a black Sharpy to colour the rivets and make them invisible.

Tomorrow, both the front driver's and rear right passenger inner door frames will get cat's whiskers riveted to them.

One photo from today (I'm using the whiskers with the fancy stainless steel edging to dress the car up a bit):

Well that is embarassing. "Tomorrow" turned out to be 370 days later. (Today Aug 20, 2019). Wow.

Anyway I started with the left rear inner door frame yesterday and got it and the front drivers door done and the inner door frames installed.

One of the biggest issues was bending the little bit at the one end that was curled up by the factory back in the day. I used all sorts of things to try to get it right: Pliers, a Vice, Vice-grips, a hole in my WorkMate, etc. In the end, I got a bit of a bend but not as good as the factory did. (Duh).

I used 1/8" x 1/8" aluminum rivets. I figured out the length. Bent the one end accordingly. Taped the piece in place, exposing the stainless steel trim just enough, then I drilled 1/8" holes and rivetted the trim to the door frame one hole at a time (total of 4 rivets per door frame). Blacked out the rivets with a Black Sharpie before installing the frame to the door.

I think that I originally (probably in 2017) bought two 8 ft sticks of the Cat's Whiskers that I used. I know that I messed up one piece early on. One of the photos from today shows the amount that I had left over from the second stick after doing one rear (left rear door - outer) and the four inner door window frames = 1/2" very very close to having to buy another stick.

Photos from today showing the process (no photos of the bending part):
