Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Great Pics! Here is a sampler of what's going on over here. The car appeared at the Pierce Park show in Appleton, WI and is a 1950 Nash American, one of the car lines that merged in 1954 to form AMC which was in its turn bought up by Chrysler in 1987. I just like the lines.... Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | I am surprised to see very few what we here in the states would consider export models! I only saw 2 Desoto Diplomats and no Dodge regents etc. that used Plymouth bodies and Dodge front clips and side trim. Are they not desirable there? I know many of these cars were brought over from the states in the 80s when they were not highly sought after here in the states. But I would think thaqt some of the original cars thta were sold in the area would still be there?

Location: Bjorneborg, Finland | roadkillontheweb: DeSoto Diplomats and Dodge Kingsways are somewhat rare models here.. most of them were already scrapped many decades ago. Winters are very harsh, road salt rusted them out when they were every-day drivers. There are few survivors and most of them are well-kept ones. Usually they were 4-dr sedan models and car-people consider 2-dr ht's and conv's more desirable, as everywhere..

Wise Old Village Idiot Posts: 3591 Location: Dellslow, West ("By God") Virginia ! | BTW that Nash is a '51 or 2. I think it's a '52. Something about a Nash guy was telling me, the way to tell a 1 form a 2, was those bumper wing things, going off from the upright bumper guards. The '51 style had the 'waterfall grille' and the little fined tailights, just like the one in that picture. Where the '49, '50 Nash, had the 'eggcrate' grille, and the tailights were in the bottom of the trunk lid. Anyway. Edited by alumcanTandThd 2005-11-15 12:05 PM

But I must admit I know of no 55-61 mopars exept the Aussie variants. However I do know that some Imperials were built in Switzerland. Any one educate me better on this . Dave.

Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | This brochure shows a right haand drive version but I have seen pictures of right hand drive versions. The brochure is Chrysler international S.A. I am not sure what S. A. stands for but I do not think it is South Africa and if they were made in Detroit it would say so on the brochure. they also made right hand drive cars in a plant in South Africa (61DIP1.JPG) Attachments ---------------- 61DIP1.JPG (66KB - 575 downloads)

Location: Bjorneborg, Finland | In my eyes, brochure shows a left hand drive version, not RHD. I've this same folder too. Chrysler international S.A. ( CISA), was a Swiss subsidiary of Chrysler Corporation in Geneva, Switzerland. These '61 Diplomats were built in Detroit in Dodge line.

Expert Posts: 1357 Location: Iowa USA | I see that I have typed that wrong. Yes the first right should have been a left! I have been messing up a lot lately but I have a real good excuse! about a month ago I had a fight with a table saw and the table saw won! Do not click on the picture link below if you have a weak stomach or bad heart! you have been warned. I did not post the picture with the message so if you click the link do not blame me! http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/images/finger4.jpg 21 stitches, and a broken bone. only thing left holding it on was the finger nail. They wanted to pin it but I saw no use in that. I have a new nail growing out under the old one pushing the end of the finger out at the finger tip and the bone apart! lots of fun!! I am on hydrocodone so the pain is managable but the concentration is not always were it should be. Typing has never been a strong point of mine so this just makes it worse! Lee

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | That blue Nash is a 1951 model. The "bathtub" look was used from 1949 to 1951 and only the 1951 had the squared off rear fenders with the vertical taillamps. The 1949 and 1950 models had the rear fenders rounded off and merging in with the slope of the rear tail. The 1949-50 taillamps were narrow, horizontal rectangular units on either side of the trunk lid handle along the bottom edge of the lid. The car had a couple of reflectors mounted along the inside edge of the trunk so the car could be seen at night if the trunk lid was open. The 1949-50 grille was slightly smaller with horizontal as well as vertical bars. The parking lights were square units located below the headlights and there were no chrome bars running from the front of the car around and onto the front fenders. For 1952 Nash went to a more normal "3-box" look with styling influence by Italian designer Pinin Farina. The blue 1951 Nash is either a Statesman or an Ambassador. "S.A." is French, and stands for "Societe Anonyme", the French equivalent of "Limited". In other words, the company is owned by stockholders and not a partnership.

Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | That's a pretty nice 1957 DeSoto Adventurer that you took a picture of. I'm also intrigued by the late 80s early 90s GM (Chevvy?) station wagon in the background in the same picture. The one that has the lettering "Hillbilly Hospital" on the left rear door. I'll bet there was an amusing story about that car. Any more details about that one? Seeing as how there aren't any hillbillies in Sweden that I know of, (trolls maybe but no hillbillies) I expect this was a recent import from the USA. Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Ray Bell - 2006-04-14 1:46 AM I think 'Societe Anonyme' means the same as 'Proprietory Limited' rather than just 'Limited'... it means that the liability of the shareholders is limited, so they might as well be anonymous. In Canada, there is no "Proprietory Limited", just "Limited". If a company issues shares, the liability of the owners of those shares is limited to value of their shares. There are two types of share companies - public (shares sold on the stock exhange) and private (limited number of shareholders and restrictions on how and where shares may be sold). Members of the board of directors can be held liable for their actions or liable for moneys they have signed for, but those are different matters. Bill Vancouver, BC

Elite Veteran Posts: 663 Location: Oakley, Ill | That Nash is a 51. The 49 and 50 had rounded rear ends that sloped down, the 51 has the fin. The 52 is the new boxy body used until they quit making Nashs after the 57 Model year.

Expert Posts: 3068 Location: Scotland | Yes all of those cars were in mint condition, especially the 57 DeSoto Adventurer,it was better than new. There are many Hillbillies in Sweden they call them "Raggare" quite a wild bunch ,but just having fun http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raggare as for the Nash,it's ok but i prefer the step-down Hudsons of the same era.

If so I would love to see a picture if you have one, I have always liked the looks of these cars, and would like to find one someday, but I have never seen on in real life, I figure that they must be about the same size as an Opel, I don't think many were imported by their owners to the U.S. Are there very many still left in your part of the world? Veteran Posts: 117 Location: OHIO | Nice looking 57 New Yorker, but the mud flaps would have to go! The emblems on them are for cars in the 60's! Car would look great with out them. Wide White Wall's would also help the car's look. Edited by MOPARHEMIPAUL 2006-05-21 9:11 AM

Location: Staffordshire, England | Wow Dave! Those photos from Vasteras look familiar, you must have been standing right beside me or something, I can even see my mates Mick and the Garrow brothers on some of them, and the Irish fella with his daughter (forgotten their names again :-/ ). Gorgeous pearlescent mushroom '61 New Yorker on 17" 5-spokes is my old car, myself and Mick enjoyed cruising round in her again.

Elite Veteran Posts: 663 Location: Oakley, Ill | I don't mean to be picky, but that is a 51 Nash, either Statesman or Ambassador. The 49 and 50 nashes had the taillights horizontal in the trunk lid, and the rear fenders sloped and were rounded, not with a small fin with the vertical taillights in the ends like 51. The 49-50 grill is a concave square grid, not the convex vertical bar used in 51. Nash never made an AMERICAN, it was a 59 and later Rambler, originally made from the reserected 55 body, with the wheel openings instead of skirted wheels like the 50-55 Ramblers had. They are neat cars--although styled somewhat similar to the step down Hudsons, they were a very comfortable highway car of the time. Although not exactly reputed to be fast, there was an Ambassador that ran on local speedways around Chicago quite successfully.
