Expert 5K+ Posts: 9664 Location: So. Cal | I've been thinking of making one of these for quite a while now. I originally made one out of sheet metal, but it didn't hold the air cleaner as well as I would like. So I made this one out of plastic with a ledge on the inside that creates a positive stop for the air cleaner to press against. It works really well, but I think I made it a little too tall to use with a Chrysler cleaner as they have a deeper extension on them. It might not clear the hood well with a deep extension on it. But it does work well with the Dodge air cleaners that have short extensions, and that is what I have on here now. I'll try re-designing it to make it work well with the Chrysler cleaner and see how it goes. Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | I got tired of trying to make an adapter that worked well so I just swapped carb tops. The early "small ring" AFB top fits right on the later aftermarket AFB's and Edelbrocks. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9664 Location: So. Cal | That's a great idea to swap the tops like that. But my main motivation for doing this is to be able to use the original air cleaners with a fuel injection throttle body. Swapping the tops on those wouldn't be an option.

John, I took a look at doing this and found that all of the mopar small top carbs are not compatible with the later AFB's. Do you know which carbs are compatible? Out of my large stash, I only have one top that is compatible, and that one was mis-matched so I don't know what it came from. Do you have to use a GM or Ford carb to be able to swap them with the later versions? Any clues as to which ones work for that?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . When I first got my 56 Dodge, it came with a 57 Dodge "side saddle" air cleaner. I hated it because it hid the right bank hemi valve cover. So one of the first things that I did was to buy an after-market air cleaner. Naturally it had a 5 1/8" throat. So I looked for an adapter and found the Mr. Gasket 2082 which adapts 5-1/8 Inch air cleaners to 4-7/32 Inch carb necks. Ridgid and thin black plastic. https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/air_cleaners/parts/2082 There is also this one that has been machined from teflon: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Carter-WCFB-Rochester-4GC-adapter-for-stock-...
