Today's edition of Hemming's On Line has a great article on the 300C that Carl Kiekhaefer modified with the intent of running it in NASCAR events. Wayne Graefen, who has been a great contributor to this the Home of the Forward Look, is working on its restoration.
The link below will take you to the article.
Good job, Wayne, on a fine survivor of automotive history.

Thanks, Joe. Car is getting last finishing touches for the May 6 show at McPherson, Kansas. Did an email exchange with Dan Strohl of Hemmings at his request from which he wrote the article. Hope to see some FLers at the show.

Neat car! great it's being restored. Had a 300C vert 30 yrs ago.

I'm also a fan of Mercury outboards, Carl (real name Elmer) Kiekhaefer, and Charlie Strang, former owner of the car. Charlie was the designer of many of Merc's engines up to mid 60s, including the famed Tower of Power inline 6 cyl, he was the actual inventer of the I/O outdrive brought out by Volvo Penta around 1959, and was later the CEO of Outboard Marine OMC during their heyday. Amazingly at 96 years of age Charles D. Strang is still with us and active at MIT! You should let him know about the car Wayne!

Elmer Carl Kiekhaefer was the full name. He preferred to be called "Carl". Those who knew him called him "EC".

My first correspondence with Charlie Strang was in '97 or 8. He is quite aware of the car. He didn't "own" it, rather it was the Mercury Outboard Corp. executive car that he drove for about two years.
