Working on my back seat at the moment. Removed the seat cover that came with the car (supposedly a factory/aftermarket cover - it was hog-ringed on) only to find a pleasant surprise. The vinyl is uncut and the fabric unripped. However, both need some TLC cleaning.

I found the thread about cleaning the vinyl with GoJo and will follow that. I did a small area of vinyl with Goof Off today but felt that it was too aggressive and might actually be eating the vinyl a bit. I will give GoJo cream a go.

Then on to the fabric. Normally I would think of a fabric shampoo, e.g. Bissell, however, I know that I don't want to get the substrate beneath the factory fabric wet because it appears to be very organic, i.e. jute and maybe horse hair (??) - stuff that I know I shouldn't get wet and moldy. I would consider renting a carpet cleaner with a upholstery head that has an extraction vacuum but don't know if that would be overkill or prevent the mold issue.

This is what I want mine to look like (mine is the same vinyl/fabric combination but not as bright and fresh as this one):

Lanolin to be specific. This is supposed to be a good thing for the vinyl. I would keep it off the cloth to prevent staining.

Thanks.

Run light with the bissell and leave the car out in the sun to cook (windows cracked) and you shouldn't have a mold problem. Don't soak the seats and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the warning(s). So what do you suggest that I use to clean 61 years of grunge off the vinyl? (It's not that bad but it certainly hasn't been cleaned while is sat idle since 1992).

I just want to make my car better.

windex works great on interiors , dawn works with a terry rag . in the past i've even used a soft babies hair brush to work it up a little but using a brush ya gotta be careful not to fling the
dirty residue everywhere but what do i use the most of , windex followed by terry rag dampened with armorall -------------------------------------------------------later

I tried some glass cleaner on the seat back vinyl. Not much action.

I tried solvent on the seat back vinyl. Not much action.

I tried Goof-Off on the seat back vinyl. TOO much action. That stuff removes a bit of the vinyl with the dirt.

I tried Bissell Upholstery and Carpet cleaner with its soft brush on a portion of the seat back fabric (both front and rear). Won't know until tomorrow.

Griots Magic Snake Oil is too far away from me.

Wow. Time flies. Fantastic day out today here in the Vancouver BC area. I had the rear seat out of the house (where it's been since Nov. 1/17) and deep cleaned the fabric.

I used Shout, Oxyclean, Woolite for pets and EasyOff uphosltery cleaner in varying degrees. I have foam off the seat bottom as per this post:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=67105&...

I spread a contractors-grade garbage bag over the jute and then put old wife-approved-for-the-task towels on top of that (and under the fabric). I used the sprays and then used Oxyclean dissolved in warm water and wearing gloves I scrubbed the fabric (tough stuff) with surgeon's scrub brush (we buy them in bulk for multiple cleaning issues) applied the warm water/OxyClean solution, blotting up the crud as much as possible with Bounty the quicker picker-upper towels (cheap at Costco). And repeated that spray/wash/blot several times.

In the middle of that, I tried the Shout fabric spray on the vinyl with the surgeon's scrub brush. SOB worked real well - better than anything that I had tried before.

When I had done a number of rounds of the spray/wash/blot, I changed the towels out for dry ones and moved on to straight warm water with the scrub brush, blotting as much as possible. When I thought I had rinsed everything enough, I removed the towels and the garbage bag and propped the fabric up and away from the jute with clean up-turned large yogurt tubs and let the fabric dry in the sun.

Didn't take a final photo but it is much improved clean-wise. This photo was taken just before I started the rinsing. Now to get the new foam and get the seat back together.
