Islander62 bought this yesterday, I will let him post the details here but he asked me to upload the photos. The car has 58,000 miles, Canadian built 1961 Saratoga. All original condition. It's been in dry storage since around 1979.

Mighty fine car indeed! Congrats to the find

I notice the hubcaps are the same as '60 Chrysler - did the Canadian '61's use those as well or are they "wrong"?
The New Yorker rear fender ornaments as well - was that used on the Canadian Saratogas

Thankyou.....apparently, as Ian has told me, Canada did use the '60 hubcaps on these cars. We wondered about the New Yorker fender treatment too and are going to wait until we can strip out the trunk, ( it is still complete with the original rubber matt and cardboard liner....) to take a closer look at how they were installed. At this point the trunk looks undisturbed since new but we want to have a better look to see if there are any signs that they might have been installed later.

This '61 had been in a garage for the past 37 years. It belonged to a one time WPC member in Vancouver BC who had it since new. This one, along with a '59 Custom Royal, were tucked away by the owner in 1980 and lovingly preserved in peace and quiet until last week. The '59 is being kept by his grandson while the decision was made to let the '61 go. The grandson contacted Ian over here on the Island asking if anyone in the WPC would be interested in buying the car.....after a very brief word the ball was in motion.

We've had a good look at the car and determined that it needs, of course, a full servicing and gentle awakening to bring it back to life....we'll keep you posted.

In my 1961 Canadian (stamped "Russel Motors, Winnipeg-Manitoba" ) Chrysler brochure, the images of the Saratoga do not show the New Yorker rear fender chrome.

I think they've been added at some point. Once an inspection is done of the trunk with the panels removed we may be able to tell.

Mine OEM Mopar / FL logo floor mat in the back. There's one in front too.

Very nice floor mats - the quality of those old ones are really Amazing. I have another type NOS in the rear and the re-popped ones in the front - the quality of the green re-popped ones leaves many things to whish for......

Since this is a Canadian Saratoga, the inner upper door garnishes are chromed (US had painted ones) and I beleive that the inner upper hardtop garnishes are Stainless instead of painted. The front window inner garnishes are also chromed.

A Little extra bling for the Canadian market - very nice!

Sven, yes, there seems to be more interior chrome/stainless on the Canadian Chryslers in 1960-61. My 60 Saratoga, which is a US built car ( Los Angeles) has stainless steel inner upper roof garnishes, but the window sill garnishes are painted on mine, as are the windshield inner garnishes.

One beautiful car!

For the data tag on the car -

Model - R C 2 M 43
R - Model Year - 1961
C - Car Line - Chrysler
2 - Engine - 383 V8 (B block)
M - Series - Saratoga
4 - Doors - 4
3 - Body Style - Hardtop

Body No. - 886
886th RC2-M-43 built at Windsor, ON

Paint Code - XN
Two tone colour scheme -
X - Roof Colour - Glacier White (Ditzler 8218)
N - Body Colour - Corona Red (Ditzler 71006)

The white, 8218, was used on American cars in 1960 and 1961 (Chrysler and Imperial - Alaskan White, DeSoto - Shell White, Dodge Satin White in 1950 and Snow White in 1961, Plymouth - Oyster White for 1960 and Alpine White in 1961). In Canada 8218 was Nassau White for 1960 and Glacier White for 1961. Chrysler of Canada generally used the same colours for all Canadian-built cars.

The red, 71006, was used in the U.S. on the 1960 Dodge Dart (Vermilion). In Canada it appeared in 1961 (Corona Red), 1962 (Festival Red), 1963 (Fiesta Red), and early1964 (Flame Red).

Trim Code - RCA
1961 Red with White cloth and vinyl

The New Yorker trim is not factory. Someone added it sometime after the car was built. Chrysler Canada did not build New Yorkers in Canada from 1957 through 1962.

The "Saratoga" nameplate on the front fender would be rather rare as the Saratoga was built only in Canada after 1960. The 1961 "M" series in the US was the Windsor, with "Windsor" in script on the rear quarter panels.

It runs.....not too bad either. It's going to need a complete exhaust and water pump but the engine is quiet and sound. Went into gear without any trouble and didn't show any signs of a leak.......the brakes are next.

Great news!

As for the Engine, change the oil and add some extra zink and phosporus like ZDDP
As for the transmission, check the fluid, level, color and smell - if in doubt, change the fluid and add a small bottle of Omega 917 http://www.megalubricant.com/pages/products/omega-lubricants/omega-... for to soften up the internal rubber seals.

Thanks for the great advice Sven......we did change the oil and filter as well as checking the transmission for the fluid condition you mention. It appears to be in really good shape at this time, but none the less, I'll be doing a fluid change and service at a later date.

We used Shell Rotella T Diesel 10W-30 along with a Lucas zinc additive. The only trouble we had was with the oil filter.......I've been doing this for over 40 years and have never had a filter like this one. We ruined two filter wrenches...the band type.....and finally ended up using a marlon spike driven through the filter body to crack it loose....I can't remember a spin on being so stubborn....the new one went on with no trouble or leaks...

Needless to say, we did the plugs, points and condenser along with a fresh carb kit. We still have to change the fuel pump and get the gas tank cleaned out.....we're currently running a gravity feed with premium fuel......more later.

The Shell Rotella T Diesel is a good choice and a Little extra zink never hurts our old engines!

When you do the transmission fluid change, check also the rubber bushing on the throttle lever at the transmission. Most probably it has crumbled our softened up so that you don't get the proper shift patterns. Change the rubber bushing and do a linkage adjustment and enjoy the "new ride".

It's so cool and intereting to follow the revival of old survivors!

Going to a WPC monthly meeting today here on picturesque Vancouver Island....( I say that because we can finally see it after all the snow and rain, it's been an unusually rough year weather wise and will be nice to see more of this sunshine! )

The '61 really is a pleasure to work on....being stored inside for all of its' life really makes a difference compared to a lot of the stuff we drag home.
I'll be getting underneath this week to check out the obvious...looking for any leaks or signs of perished rubber and hoses.....I'll likely replace them all in any event....wouldn't do the car justice to only have a new appearance and not put new components in.

Off to hang out with Ian and the lads.....( and ladies of course ...) ...more later.

Ya I agree she's mighty fine and once you start putting the wrenches on it you automatically grow more attached is what I found as well as gaining more knowledge and experience. This last year for me has been challenging and rewarding in that regard for myself. Your Chrysler is a great driver as I remember test driving one back in 1970 My Dad had lined up a car deal for me on a similar car to yours, but the dealer wouldn't through in 2 new tires on the selling price and I walked on the deal……and walked and walked…….LOL

Thanks for this.....it's turned out to be a really neat car. I still can't get over how original it is....the paint, interior and chrome are in wonderful original condition with just the right amount of patina to authenticate them.....the enamel paint still shows signs of just how thick they put it on...with a good old wax and polish it should stay in good condition well into the future.
Had it running yesterday on a gravity feed...we'e going to drop the tank this week and get it boiled out....I have a water and fuel pump coming today. Checked the fluid in the trans and then moved it around the shop under it's own steam...feels tight. I'm going to rebuild the master cylinder and replace the wheel cylinders....the shoes are in near new condition as are the drums.....more later.

Small world, I'm the grandson who kept the '59. Had the same problems with the filter on the dodge as well, bent a filter wrench but got it off eventually, from what i can tell the fluids were last changed late 70s when they were parked, oil filter on my car was marked "OCT 12 1978" , 10yrs before i was even born hahaha.

Good to see the car is coming along nicely.

"Oil filter changes" Never tighten with a wrench when installing…… firmly hand tighten and firstly always always smear oil on the rubber gasket before installing. Oh yes lest I forget pre fill the filter with oil. These are just some of rare and different things that the prior owners of our cars just done with out thinking. I know my D500 shows some signs of "Clown Activity" by previous owners I just shake my head and laugh until I realize I own it now ……..LOL

Congratulations on getting the '59 up and running Cory.....when we picked up the '61 from Wes at your Grandmothers' place we took a look at the Dodge and were surprised at just how nice it really is....the '61 is the same.....your Grandfather did a really good job of looking after these cars and they both deserve the best care and attention now and in the future. It isn't often that you find cars of any kind in such great original condition. The paint on the '61 is original as is the interior....the carpets and floor mats are like new.
We have it running and licensed now with new exhaust and ball joints.....the tires are the ones that your Grandfather put on the car and are virtually new.....the downside is they sat flat for so many years in the garage..... as a result they have flat spots that i don't think are going to iron themselves out with normal use...we're going to replace them with classic radials in the future....

Again.....on behalf of us all....welcome to the site!...keep in touch and ask any question.....we'll be happy to help you keep that Custom Royal Lancer on the road....

Yea luckily he had put stands under the '59 so the tires never went flat, currently just trying a few different approaches to cleaning up the white walls as they have yellowed a fair bit, i found an appraisal on the car from the mid 80s stating the tires were brand new at that point. it is also going to need at the very least new down pipes, mufflers back are brand new. slowly working away on it, if all goes as planned and that langley good times cruise in makes the move to aldergrove i wouldn't mind having it in that show to end the summer.

Will for sure keep in touch.
