Howdy everyone,

Wanted to post up my latest find. I had posted the data tag in the decode section about a week ago, but did not want to post much about it until I had the car on my trailer.

I found this in a field in Central Nebraska. At first I walked right past it, just thinking it was a regular 2 door sedan. When I saw the D-500 badge on the trunk, I became much more interested.

The car is a 1957 Dodge Coronet 2 Door Sedan that was originally ordered for the Missouri Highway Patrol. I immediately wanted the car. After a few weeks I was able to return and get it.

From what I can tell, it was ordered with the following options:

Heater
Padded Dashboard (Very strange in a police car!)
Torque flight
Super D-500 2x4 325 Hemi

I have sent FCA for the buildsheet.

I am very excited and hope to have the car back on the road in the next year. I am on the hunt for a '57 325 Hemi, but I may use a poly until the right one is found.

Me, in the middle, with two more car friends:

(Notice the incorrect miror and spotlight placement on this MHP "58, same as my car)

All the best in your rebuild of this Super D500 "In these parts you could have got arrested for theft" just kiddin' That's a great find and a life time of stories and memories for a young fellow such as yourself, as you already know these cars don't show up on your driveway every weekend. The KD500 325 Hemi engine maybe hard to come by I probably own the only 2 in Canada or until someone shows or calls me on that statement of claim. Keep us posted on your progress and the hotheads swap meet is a great start for hemi's

Up under the dash looking at the wiring and such, I looked at the bottom of the dashboard and found this:

I think a cop car is a pretty cool restore. Is there even one in existence? a restored cop car 57 dodge?

I know I see a few floating around not sure if anyone has restored. Even a unmarked hot rod would be cool.

A 325 hemi is rough but a 325 isn't that hard or an equivalent.

here is one head... and a working 325 poly

Just an observation: The valve covers don't have the bumps needed to clear the solid lifter adjusters. 315 D500 hemis had (and needed) the bumps because they were solid lifter engines. Not sure whether 325s were solid lifter or hydraulic.

Not sure, I have not been able to find a restored one. The state of Missouri owns a very nice 1959 Four Door Sedan. I am unsure if it is original or has been restored, but I am betting its been redone.

The strange thing is, why would someone mark "police" on the bottom of the dash. to what purpose did that serve? They are not any different than regular dashes... however this car does have a padded dash, which, in a cheapo police car must have been rare.

who knows.......

I don't know *BUT* I can guess. I believe that dashes were pre-assembled with gauges, etc. before the assembly was installed in the car. As a result, because the cop cars likely had special gauges, including a certified accurate speedometer, they might have been marked "Police" to make sure that they went into cop cars and not civilian cars.

Maybe.

a lot of people took those out when they were decommissioned. They were worth money and maybe collectors items?

I've seen all kinds of things written on the underside of various FL dashboards; "CONVT" or "BLK", etc.

I'm sure that meant something to the people on the line at the time. It might have been because this dashboard was police-specific in some way. Maybe because it has a padded dash in an otherwise basic Coronet.

I bet it was because the Police pursuit units got the Plymouth full horn ring steering wheel.

LOL…….If your build sheet comes back with the matching serial # that's on my 325 cu.in it could be your lucky day.My 2dr. came out of southern Montana although it has a California plate on it. I don't believe that mine was ever a dual quad as everything on the engine appears to be original……that's always a big statement on here, at least era correct

Some circles say the Plymouth wheel was used for the full circumference horn ring. check out this 1961 dodge on Lenos show:

http://jalopnik.com/interestingly-enough-in-1961-highway-patrol-car...

another with a 57 wheel:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=16118&...

Same in 1962:

Great find John! That's why you are da KING!! The steering wheel IS factory police. They used those wheels up until 1962 on most police cars (Dodge & Plymouth) due to the full horn ring. All the literature I've read on police cars, feature that '57 Plymmie steering wheel on all models through 1962. I've never seen a '59 Dodge that way, but I'm convinced that's the correct wheel. Here's a photo of a 62 Dart police with the same wheel. Good stuff! Pete.

1958 dodge:

All factory built Dodge police cars used a 1957 Plymouth steering wheel, from 1957-1962. They were easier for the officers to use and, of course, the cheapest steering wheel chrysler made.

did some more work on the Police Car last night. Removed the front seat and vinyl floor mat. To my suprise there is mounds of dust inside this car. my poor little shop vac...

Anyway once I got the mat out I was able to finally figure out where the radio was mounted. and even cooler, the 4 flat head screws are still there in the floor!

Found some more chalk scribbles on the door, no idea...

Congrats on the build card and sheet. That didn't take long to get the info back compared to some us on here which took several months and a couple of tries. I'm out a couple #'s out on the engine number…………….LOL but I still have my fingers crossed for you all the way. Here's the engine in my Coronet KD500-19200

Notice the ignition key and the trunk key are the same code. Only done on police cars.
