My 56 Dodge Custom Royal D500 was a radio delete car (presumably to save weigh so it would go faster (LOL)). In any event, I bought a "Town and Country", i.e. electro-touch radio and had it converted to the 21st century. ( http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63825 )

I had assumed that 6 x 9 was the correct speaker size for the front and rear. However, I borrowed a scrap 6 x 9 from the radio guy (Larry Wood) and this morning I tried it both under the dash and on the rear parcel tray. I can make 6 x 9's work on the parcel tray but 6 x 9 in the dash would be too big. (I may have to go back to thinking kick panel speakers)

I tried to find the OE PN for the front speaker for a 56 CR and found nothing.

Questions:

1. Anybody know the correct size of these speakers?

2. Where should I run the speaker wires to the parcel shelf? Down the right side of the car? down the middle? (assume carpet is not an issue).

I've got an answer for my speaker size question. 5" x 7". I cut a 4"x 6" cardboard oval but that was too small. Then I tried a 5"x7" cardboard oval. That fit nicely into both the front speaker area and the rear speaker cut-out (which would have been in the middle)

Still need suggestions on where to run the speaker (and rear dual antenna wiring).

Okay. I still need help. Dave Homstad provided me with a copy of the 910 HR installation manual and it calls for a 6 x 9 front speaker. I've spent sometime up under the dash with a junk 6 x 9 just to get the feel for sizing. It's too big. 5 x 7 must be closer. But even then, the stud spacing (4" C to C) doesn't seem compatible with existing 5 x 7s.

I need photos of an actual 56 Custom Royal installation or something. Can anybody help? (Please)

Okalie Doakalie then Pilgrims. Just got the missing bits that I needed to see for the front speaker mount in my 56 Dodge.

Photos below:

1. The missing bits that I emailed French Lake Auto Parts (FLAP). And they came through, with a radio to boot. I also contacted John at Big M but I am yet to receive anything.

2. The speaker and dash grill (Broken) in the correct position, confirming the overhang. Note: The grill also has its own fine metal mesh behind the grill bars.

3. The front of the speaker plate with the grill removed. Also shows the rubber (??) buffer ring between the speaker plate and the grill/dash. Not sure about those perforation.

4. The back of the speaker plate showing how the speaker is bolted to the plate.

5. Side view of the speaker plate showing how the buffer rubber is a) tapered and b) not the same thickness.

Now to get a speaker.

Because I thought I didn't like those big perforations in the mounting plate (I don't know why it isn't totally open), I used the OE plate as a template to trial a new open plate from cardboard. Once I tried that up under the dash, I used some 0.090 thick aluminum sheet that I bought earlier today to make a trial open metal mounting plate. Worked pretty well. I've got the new plate up under the dash, held on by the four studs and two nuts for the night. But old guys can only do so much in a day before they hear a beer calling their name.

Photos tomorrow.
