I'm re-working my door panels as the plastic between the panel and the door was mis-routed and tore up resulting in warped panels with mushy clip holes. The vinyl is in nice shape but in the red center section above the arm rests and by the window cranks and door handles it's blackish from sixty years of skin oils and use.

I wanted to clean them with something as gentle as possible so started with a tooth brush and some Dawn dish soap but that didn't touch it. I also tried some Simple Green and Greased Lightning in small spots where the arm rest would hide it in case it reacted. Still nothing. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation and found success with a certain product or method?

Thanks,

Try Isopropyl alcohol or methanol. Alcohol is not harsh on paints as much as other solvents, yet is still able to cut through a lot of tough buildup.

You could try GOJO hand cleaner. Get the creme one, without any abrasive in it. I restore vintage radios, and most collectors use it to clean years of smoke build-up and skin oils from wooden and plastic cabinets, with no troubles. It doesn't even harm the lacquer finish. But I'd still test it in a small area first...

If the color doesn't come back, you can always re-spray the vinyl with paint made for it.

pretty hard to ruin anything with gojo and it'll clean real good while adding lanolin to the material with the color coming out as bright as possible---------------------------------------------later

Re: GOJO
Has anyone heard of using this on the door and deck lid seals? I have but never tried it because I was afraid it would dry out eventually.

I use it on front and rear windshield gaskets when I have to re-use them, the lanolin in the GoJo softens them up nicely.

If it's really nasty, I have had good results with goof off removing years of grime. Then follow it with Go Jo and a vinyl conditioner
