I set my P. brake, and I MAY[?] have left it on but not sure[?]. I go somewhere and go to set the P.B. and it barely sets. Just enough to hold on a slight grade. I figured I left it on and fried it. On the way home, I hear this racket under the car but it only last a second and then it's fine. Get home, set the P.B. and its all good again.??? Leave the house today, stop and set the break[which feels fine]. Release the brake pull out and all is well but I smell the brake burning and then it rattles again.

I know the rattle is the P.B. because i put my foot on the P.B. peddle and i can feel it shaking. I stop and there is no peddle again. I leave, it rattles again but now there is a peddle and no burning smell.

Before i start tearing things apart, where do I start? Is the cable sticking or a spring in the drum or?

Thanks for any input and enjoy this REALLY warm weekned in the N.E.

Later,
Karl.

By the symptoms you say.. I would hazard a guess and say the linings have broke off the shoes,, As i had similar thing on my 59 dodge years ago.. As the lining slips round it caused the brake drum to bang at speed over 25mph, and parking brake lever came way up high, then the next tiem i tried the parking brake it wa good as the shoe liner had slipped back over the shoe,, eventually the shoe liner broke up giving me excessive parking lever movement till i eventually pulled the drum to to see both liners were missing,,

You are going to have to pull the drum now regardless , as it needs investigating mate.. as if it is the shoe liners let go, they it can lock up completely going down the road,, the rattle may be the shies trying to lock the drum when in motion...

Or, if you're lucky, the retanier spring just jumped off. Pull the parking brake drum...

I figured I would need to pull the drum reguardless. I like to ask or describe something as I BELIEVE anything that has happened to my car has probably happened to someone else and it is good to see what happened and how they dealt with it before I start.

Not having any special tools and never having pulled the parking brake drum, how do I lock it to remove the center nut? The shop manual says to use a puller. Won't the drum just come off once the nut is removed? Is it pressed on?

Basically, what will I need and how difficult will it be?

thanks again,
Karl.

Normally it's enough to whack the ratchet with a good rubber mallet to loosen the nut and normally you won't need a puller to get off the drum.
You could also use a metal bar to hold the studs while you loosen/tighten the nut.

So this is normally a very easy work.........

Then we have Murphy's law of course.....

Also, be SURE to use PPE, like an N95 mask or respirator. Those old shoes will be made with asbestos, so the dust will be toxic...

You were right, the linings fell off. Possibly because I left the brake on[?]. The tranny seal was leaking also so that was replaced. The spring was weak and that was replaced also.

Murphy was an ass... mostly because he was always right and I really hate that about negative people. :P
