Location: North Australia | Seems to be a bit of focus on the 55 and 56 cars on the site lately, and rightly so in my opinion. Fine looking cars. Pity the government did not keep the Presidents Automobiles, like the presidents airplanes at Wright Patterson Air Force Base museum.
Have any of you Guys been here? Awesome museum. I mean really awesome!

At least in the 70s, the common practice was to put heavy glass in and fill the doors/quarters with a cement fill. The body would rust from the inside out amd be junk, unlike the planes. |

Location: Under the X in Texas | Jackie Kennedy's Ghia limo was actually a 1961. It says so in some factory literature. Now, to explain, Chrysler sent 25 LeBaron sedan shells to Ghia in 1960. 19 were finished in '60. The other 6 were finished in '61 and titled 1961. Jackie's car was the only one that was black leather throughout the interior, a feature which she personally specified. As far as I have been able to learn, the car has not been seen since the day of the JFK funeral. However, note that the Kennedy's leased this car from Chrysler Corporation so presumably they got it back shortly after the funeral.
I owned a '60 Imperial Ghia limo (Nelson Rockefeller's) The side glass was made by Sekurit in Europe and was standard thickness. I was inside the doors working on door latches and there was no bullet proofing of any sort. Ghia's body work was evident. The car had what I would call "bomb proofing" added to the chassis in the form of horizontal steel box sections that would first collapse to absorb an explosion under the car. |

| I was curious about the 1960 Chrysler Imperial Ghia used by Jackie Kennedy
in the White House. It is best remembered as the car that transported Jackie and family
to the JFK funeral events. Her Secret Service agent Clint Hill is active on Twitter and I
tried to contact him without success. I then tried the co-author of his recent books
on life in the White House, Lisa McCubbin. Success! I didn't think the car had an
all black interior, just the driver's seat, which was standard black piped leather. The passenger seating
was available in beige or gray broadcloth. Jackie's Ghia had gray passenger seating per Mr. Hill who road in the car with her to events during 1961-63. It was Mamie's car first when it was new during the last year of the Eisenhower administration, 1960. You can see the gray armrest next to
her skirt in the color picture in this forum string. Here is the reply I received:
HI Bill
According to Clint, the car had been used by Mrs. Eisenhower during the Eisenhower administration. When the Kennedys came into office, this car was selected to be used for Mrs. Kennedy on formal and state functions. It was not used on a day-to-day basis. As he recalls, it had gray, extremely plus interior in the passenger section.
“I spent a great deal of time in that car during that three year period,” he says. “It was used in the funeral procession for transporting the children to and including the services at St. Matthews Cathedral. However they did not go to Arlington National Cemetery.” You can see Mr. Hill to the left of Bobby Kennedy coming down the stairs.

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | Not that this is really about the subject but I recently had a neighbor move in the house across from my house.
Just found out that he is the son of David Eisenhower[son of Dwight] & Patricia Nixon[daughter of Richard/Dick].
Haven't had a chance to talk to him yet but who knows, maybe he can give me some history? The children of President Eisenhower grew up down the street.
In the 60s, we used to go over to their place and I vaguely remember some big cars. Again, maybe there still in one of the large garages?
I just want to see if I can get on the property with my metal detector. I believe the estate was built in the late 1700s? |

Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | These estates are in a wooded area off the main road on a peninsula that sticks out into a beautiful small creek/reservoir. Most of these mansions
are pre-1800s. I recently drove past there and looked as far into the woods as I could.
The only place I could see. There were 2 LARGE cars out front of a long row of garages. I couldn't tell if they were Bentley's or Rolls's but they were definitely one and or the other.
Both were brown and gold or silver? My guess were around 1959? I don't think that was the Eisenhower estate but it was really cool to see. |
