What I found when I removed the distributor was a thin metal ring. Doesn't seem like a gasket. How does it retain oil? I expected a rubber O-ring or rubber gasket, not metal.

I think the PN is 1326 836 (or 1326836 for Google).

This what turns up:

There isn't much oil in the vicinity of the gasket so the embossed tin works very well.
As a cost reduction measure, later gasket sets include a paper gasket.

In cases of pretty severe blow-by (crankcase pressure) you might get oil leakage without a gasket but usually not.
