Veteran Posts: 161 Location: Pearland, Texas, McPherson, Kansas | Hey Guys, So I am working a 361 out of my Newport and I have what I think is an issue. Firstly, when I was disassembling this extremely neglected engine (hasn't run since 89 and was in a scrapyard for some time) the slot in the distributor itself where it mounts to the oil pump driveshaft broke off. No problem, I have an extra driveshaft from the 383 that I have just in case i need to swap engines. However, when I was trying to get the old driveshaft out, it was very difficult. I ended up having to use a pipe wrench and screwdrivers and a hammer However, I did not damage the bushing at all which is good news. When I went to put the replacement driveshaft in today, it would go in about halfway and stop. (I did lube the driveshaft with some motor oil so if that is the problem please tell me) It seemed like it was actually forming a seal with the bushing and trapping air under the driveshaft. I was wondering if there was some sort of bleed bolt or whatnot on the oil pump itself so that the air can bleed while I place the entire driveshaft in. All help is greatly appreciated Thanks Jacob

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Bushings need to be reamed to size when installed. Maybe someone replaced it sometime ago and never did this. You can cut a sharp longitudinal groove in the old driveshaft and use it as a reamer perhaps. I would have a close look at/inside the oilpump to find out why the driveshaft tip sheared off.

They were seized together from sitting with the hood up in a scrap yard Jacob

Actually, correct installation requires a special burnishing tool, reaming is not recommended. Easiest way to remove a stubborn intermediate shaft is to remove the oil pump first, then drive the shaft out from the bottom. A varnish ridge on the shaft will make shaft removal difficult even with a proper size bushing.

Actually just got done removing the pump. Found out the reason I was having so much trouble was a buildup of sludge. Cleaned it all out and it is fine now. I have the driveshaft set to TDC and will reinstall pump tomorrow. Jacob
