I am at my wit's end with the 413 in my '60 Imperial. I have replaced every component in the ignition system except the ignition switch, which is fine. The motor cranks over good but the spark at the plugs is very weak. Supposedly this engine was running 2 years ago but I never heard it run. I am going to try a different coil tomorrow and see if that changes anything. Anyone experienced this before or have any ideas? Thanks

Probably too strong / non-matching ballast resistor.
Bypass it and see if it gets better.

Additional test: turn on ignition and measure voltage between coil+ and ground.
Should be around 8-9 volts.

Try another condenser. I once spent a full day trying to start a new project. The spark seemed so/so and the engine would come so close to firing but acted like it was flooded. My feelings were the ignition parts were fine as it was coming so close to starting. I finally relented and put in a spare condenser turned the key, stepped on the starter button and it stated on the first try.

First time I ever experienced a faulty condenser.

Thanks for the ideas. I swapped the new ballast resistor with the original one from my car, no change so now I will try bypassing it. Will try another condenser tomorrow too and see what happens.

Ok so now I appear to have good spark, every second and a half. I think it actually was the ballast resistor. The motor still shows no sign of starting, turns over good but doesn't even cough or kick back. Any ideas there? Have put gas in the carb would think it would at least sound like it's going to fire. Thanks

Hi
I had this exact situation once on an engine that had been in storage a very long time ...after pre-oiling etc. I did a compression test and found consistent low readings , I shot some Rislone (its an oil additive but 10W oil is probably close) into each cylinder and it fired up right away....

Sounds like you have it wired wrong
Check and DOUBLE CHECK the plug wire routing to the distributor.
very easy to get it 180* bas ackwards
