Anyone have a recommended source for a new timing chain and gear set for a '57 Dodge w/ 325? I see several sources just wondering if anyone has bought this before.....

Your 325 Poly or Hemi can use a timing set from a later LA engine (273, 318, 340, 360). I would recommend a double-row set like a Cloyes C3028.

I recommend that you upgrade to a true roller set. They don't cost a whole lot more and they will last longer.

Be sure to verify that the sprocket that you use allows the Woodruff key to extend enough to properly drive the fuel pump eccentric. I have found many that do not extend at all and there is nothing to engage the eccentric. A new hardened pin must then be installed in the face of the gear.

Can you give us some examples of ones that have this problem? It is pretty difficult to determine that ahead of time.

Sorry, I have never kept a list. I just check them when they are ready for install and then fix them if needed.
I have found enough problems over the years that I finally machined a drill jig to properly locate the hole needed for the hardened pin that I press in.
If it was easier (for me) to post pics on this forum I'd show you what is done.

The only time I've heard of this being an issue was with the '87-later Magnum "short snout" cams. Since they had in-tank fuel pumps, there was no need for the fuel pump eccentric.

So I installed the Cloyes C3028 this weekend and it went on without a hitch and the key extended enough to engage the fuel pump eccentric but the crank gear is up against the block.

On the 331, and the 325 it sounds like, you need a spacer that looks like a wedding ring to keep the gear from locking to the block. Probably can get one from "wayfarer".

No I just installed and and saw it was hitting. I went in sat down and thought about it and went back out and saw that my anger was unfounded.

Glad to hear that as I had a small heart attack reading your original post Used the same set in my 325. Seems fine, worked good.
