I'm having a problem with my Chryslers braking system. After driving 5 or 6 miles the brakes are locked up and the brake lights are on. This car came to me recently with new wheel cylinders, master cylinder and 2 of the 3 flex lines. The car is equipped with power brakes. After sitting for about an hour they will release but after another 5 or 6 miles they are locked again.
I suspect the master cylinder relief port and am hoping it is simply the rod pushing on the master cylinder out of adjustment.
Any other ideas ?
HELP !!! I want to drive this car !!!

You should have at least 1/4 free play in the pedal before engaging the master, check that first.Btw, sweet csr!!

I had the exact same problem on my '56 Dodge. Double check to see if someone mixed up the brake pressure switch and the main distribution port on the master cylinder.

Have you thought about converting to disc brakes?

Not yet. Want to get this system working properly first. They work great for the first 4.5 miles but then they begin to lock up.

Have you tried disconnecting and plugging the vacuum line to the power brakes? Is it possibly leaking internally?

Why would that make a difference ? Both ports should be identical.

I HAVEN'T TRIED THAT YET BUT WILL IF REPLACING TO ONLY OLD RUBBER BRAKE LINE LEFT DOESN'T FIX THE PROBLEM. IT'S THE ONE AT THE REAR END JUNCTION BLOCK AND WAS LEFT. ALL OTHERS WERE REPLACED.

More than likely it's the push rod. To do a quick test slacken your mc and place a shim ( ie washers ) between the mc and bulkhead see if that works.

That is the pedal free play I asked about.

I MEASURED THE PEDAL TRAVEL WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. IT'S ONLY 1/2" OF TRAVEL AND THEN THE POWER BRAKE UNIT KICKS IN.
HERE'S SOMETHING I DON'T GET..........WHEN I DRIVE TO TOWN I ONLY ENCOUNTER 2 STOP SIGNS AND ONE STOP LIGHT BEFORE I GET THERE. SO MAYBE ONLY 4 OR 5 BRAKE PEDAL APPLICATIONS AND THEY ARE LOCK UP. NO MORE FREE PLAY IN THE PEDAL AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON. BUT IF I RUN THE CAR IN MY GARAGE I CAN APPLY THE BRAKE PEDAL 30 OR MORE TIMES AND THEY DO NOT LOCK UP. WTH?

Ok, seen this before, crack the line coming out of the master cylinder, based on your clear description of the symptoms, if the brakes release, the booster internal control valve is leaking and app!ying the master.

I would think that the problem is in the master cylinder, not the booster The booster is just an assist. Something is causing the piston in the m/c bore not to retract and release the fluid pressure on the wheel cyls. I would remove the master and rebuild or replace. Look at an exploded diagram of the master to see that all the correct parts are there and installed correctly.

Was there an update on your brake problem? My '53 Windsor Deluxe is doing the exact same thing. I suspect it's the master cylinder. I ordered a rebuild kit. I expect to get in there as soon as possible. I have been told its most likely the very small relief hole is plugged with rust and scale. Will see. I also noticed that my brake light switch, 1 wire on the switch gets very warm, too hot to touch, during this time that my brakes are dragging. I will also replace the switch when I tackle the master cylinder rebuild job.

Oh, sorry. I thought I had updated this forum on my problem.
One of these cleared up the problem ! Yes, a master cylinder !
