Well we have started the removal of the entire front of the Sportsman, fenders, inner guards, front pans, bumper brackets etc. Hood, engine and trans next week end then wiring, hoses, tubes, steering and dash ( most of dash done ). Am wondering if I should go to a padded dash instead of the original painted steel one? Am also going to put air conditioning in IF I CAN GET ONE COMPLETE. Doors are in pretty good shape but ugh the rockers and front pans have nasty nasty rust, she will be going on the rotisserie I made with the plans from the internet from winged engineering. Trying to load photos but the Galaxy S6 has them at 3.75 MB have to work out how to reduce the size.

Painted steel dash was not original. All DeSotos came with a dash pad
in 58. They were painted under the padding, but it usually was pretty
sparse and not nicely finished. Most ended up sagging or going bad, being
torn off and the dash got painted. Just Dashes makes a nice repop. There
may be others now ?

I was not aware that they came as standard, have just emailed Just Dashes for a quote. Still having trouble getting pictures up will keep trying. Also does anyone know where I could get air conditioning for this model?

Dash pads are available in Sweden at autoline.se

And these pad fits perfect. I have one of those.

My personal experience would shy away from just dashes. Over priced shipping and lots of issues getting my 60 pad to fit.

Just Dashes just quoted US$750 plus freight to OZ, this is looking quite expensive, I will see how we go with the Swedish lot.

You'll need to find a car with factory A/C if your wanting to add it. You can pull the parts from any of the 1958 cars but the trim piece in the dash is unique to desoto. I've been working on a system for a while and it will end up having parts from a 58 desoto, imperial and plymouth. Your looking for a model 902 box for a 58, i have a 57, so i'm using a 901 stamped box. The actual heater core/condensor is from the desoto along with the controls (the actual controls are the same across all the cars, along with the box and actuator). Im going to use a sanden for the compressor. The blower is 3 speeds and is the same across all the A/C boxes however the insulation style changed from a fiberglass wrap in 57 to a molded foam on the 58 blower. The switch is unique to the A/C option (3 speeds vs 2) and is also different across the lines. Not sure if desoto shares with anyone, but i know dodge/plymouth and chrysler switches are different from each other.
