While I wait for coats of Rust Converter, etc, on the inside of the driver's door on my 56 Dodge Custom Royal, I am working on other little projects. One of them is my on-going back-up light to taillight conversion. The latest one (because it was easy to start), is cleaning the "Dodge" and "Custom" and "Royal" script trims.

So far, I have started on one "Custom" and one "Royal". The steps so far have been:

1. Carefully remove trim, spinning the flat sheet steel "nuts" counter-clockwise off the pins, with pliers, being aware not to force things and snap a pin off.
2. Bathing the scripts in warm soapy water, brushing gently with an old tooth brush, making sure not to push to hard or push on an unsupported section and crack the script.
3. Thinking that an old "WaterPic" would be good to get some of the crud out of the "hollow" back side of the script. Maybe something from a second hand/Thrift store. Or maybe just more tooth brushing and/or tooth picks.
4. Drying the script with paper towels.
5. Cleaning/Polishing with VIM, a kitchen/stove scrub (with very fine grit). Using Q-tips as needed. I feel the need to lay the scripts on a thick cardboard or something that will support the script but allow the pins to go into the cardboard. Maybe I need to get a piece of 1 x 4 wood and drill holes to accommodate the pins. (?)
6. Polishing with Mothers Brand chrome polish.

Anyway, I am very open to suggestions as to how to do this better and/or faster (and safer, i.e. no broken scripts or pins)

Here is an example of my one my scripts (taken the first day I owned the car - still uncleaned at that time). Next up will be restoring the D-500 crossed-flag logo. (Hints needed there too)

This is what I always do when I clean and polish scripts - it allows you to work with a Dremel and soft felt tips without risking to deform the script.

Dremel? (I would have thought that too aggressive) Low speed I presume. Any particular polishing compound?

(Now I have to find my Dremel)

The Dremel is tender with a soft felt tip. Yes, lower speed ranges and a polishing compond that is very mild. I sometimes use paint finishing, like 3M finesse it.
Just be sure to clean and wash off old dirt before.

I sometimes shape a felt tip to the proper profile for to get into the script profiles

For bad rechromed part I used a brass brush or a fine steel brush, so as the chrome will not become scratched. Then finally

polish for the finish, as shown here with the Push Buttons Cups:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=23691&start=207

But never use abrasive media, then the chrome (10u) will be damaged or removed, and becomes

"yellow" from the nickel coating appearing.  - SERGE -
