On my '57 Imperial, when I hit the brakes, the wipers go on and stay on until I take my foot off the brake. Turning the switch does nothing. What is going on here? Assume they are grounding at the brake pedal but don't know where to start first. Wiper work normally otherwise This is an obnoxious problem

Wiring is shorting on the pedal. Look for trapped and crushed wiring.

Wipers circuit has nothing to do with the brake lights

Yes as Mick says, the wiring for the foot washer goes around that area, and that would be linked into the wipers, just check it's not got trapped around brake pedal? Shorting out when you press the brakes.

obnoxious perhaps, but a pretty cool trick when you let somebody else drive, when he brakes and the wipers go on, you turn to him and ask, "wow, how'd you do that?"...

pedal metal shorting out wiring makes sense...
but i'm confused though - both the brakes and the wipers are on a negative ground, if a wire's insulation is broken and shorted to ground via the metal of the brake pedal, i would expect a descent current drop...

put your dome light on while you are driving...
when you hit the brakes, does that dome light DIM ?

at any rate, i don't think that it is ONE wire shorting out to ground through the brake pedal metal (dome light would dim because positive is being shorted to ground) - i think that TWO wires are being pinched together and NEITHER of them are being shorted to ground (dome light does not dim)...

i would add that if you have any "wire ties" tying a bundle of wires together, make sure that there is SLACK in the tie, do *NOT* tighten that wire tie down too tightly...

polyethylene and polypropylene and PVC (wire insulation plastics) will "creep" with age, it will get thin on one side and fat on the other...
it gets thin enough that the wire conductors don't have to make physical contact, the current passing through the wires is enough to jump through the very thin insulation even without the conductors truly touching...

it's called "creep" if you ever want to read up on wire insulation and how it degrades over time...
shouldn't be an issue with a LOOSE bundle - but a "tight" wire tie is very very bad for old wiring...

Take a video of this problem in action, before you find/fix it...my friends all want to see this!

A video? So this is that strange of a problem LOL I looked under there for a while, nothing jumped out at me as touching the brake pedal and nothing is trapped. The washer switch is close to the pedal, I would assume it is happening there as no other wires are anywhere close to the pedal. Some of the wiring looks funky so I am going to get a wiring diagram too.

Ok, I dug into this problem more. There is no wiring being trapped by the brake pedal. There are no wire tires. There is no sign of any broken, stripped or repaired wires anywhere near that area.

Try to put a jumper wire between the wiper motor and the cowl, perhaps the ground strap is broken. Another thing to check is the wiper washer Circuit.

Could it be that it is a problem with the park function of the wipers? When you hit the brakes, the wipers extend further downward, causing the motor to switch into the run mode for one revolution? Seems logical. If so, you would need to adjust the park mechanism in the motor to ignore that movement.

The ground strap is a good idea, I will check on that. I don't think it's the park function because they go on and stay on.
