Well I should have posted this before since I've already been posting for a few weeks now. I'm located in Morgan Hill California.

I'm new to the DeSoto world. Just took delivery of my 1956 FireFlite 4 door sedan yesterday. Already have had lots of help from other members....thank you.

This is the biggest car I've ever owned. I've spent most of my time working with Sunbeams, Hillmans, and American Bantams. You can see some my other projects on www.dougscars.com.

Really looking forward to learning about something different and the DeSoto seems like a really great car.

Welcome! Pretty neat old car! I am new as well. This place doesn't have articles, or a lot of fixed resources but it does have a lot of old guys who know their stuff. Just pump them full of coffee and put them in gear!

Welcome to the group! That's a beauty right there. The '56 DeSotos had an elegance and style all their own--very classy. And those
colors! Wow!
What are your plans for her?

Thanks for the welcomes.

My plans are to go through the mechanicals first. The brakes sound like they have an air leak so I'll have to investigate that. Motor seems to run ok but has some lifter noise. Also plan on bringing the interior back to stock....I have a few threads investigating what it should look like. I'll also replace some of the chrome as door handles etc have heavy pitting. The pink will get repainted with the correct shell pink too. Of course in addition to this it will need general TLC.....polishing of the stainless and all those other fun little clean-up projects. Yesterday I polished the tail light lenses. They look much better now.

So far I'm having lots of fun tinkering with it. Trying to learn all I can about it.

As I said in my Private mail to you (which you might not have opened yet), Congrats. I said I was envious of a few things, e.g. your back seat and the headliner. I would like to add the carpet and the steering wheel. All very nice.

SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon is very likely to have the fabric for your front seat.

I am wondering whether your car wasn't owned by some Hollywood starlet back in the day. I wonder how you could trace the ownership back to 1956.

Question: Do you or anybody reading this post have an idea what the exhaust tips are from? I need some for my 56 Dodge Custom Royal D500 and I like the look.

Haven't seen the private message but will take a look now.

The headliner in the car is nice. It's pink and is made of cloth. Back seat needs some work.....cloth seems to be very thin. I've been in touch with SMS about the materials. They have sent me samples but they don't seem to match another member's seats which are the same 557 trim code is mine.

I'm not sure what the tips are from. Ill ask the previous owner. I've got a set of the original tips on order which are also oval but a little lower profile. I looked under the car yesterday and it looks like the exhaust pipes were either 2" or 2 1/4" so I'm not sure the new tips I ordered will fit on. Anybody know what size the stoke pipes should be?

Hope you can find out about those exhaust tips.

I think I have the blue version of these factory accessory seat covers (went over the original seat coverings to protect them):

Can you please send me or upload a picture of your seats? That may help explain some of the confusion about what sedan seat upholstery looks like. Here's a picture of another 56 interior. Patterns are very different from what mine is....picture is labeled as a hardtop so maybe they were different.

Welcome to the affliction !

56 was the last year of the non-Imperial cars being so "plush", and the
Fireflite was a very plush model. Your pink paint is WAY too potent for the
stock Shell Pink, which looks plenty pink on that large canvas ! An obvious
"overzealous" repaint color.

Your interior looks close to right, but the fabric is for another type of car.
The fabric is a raised embossing brocade. I have a roll of it here, as I am
about to cover my ameoba couch with it.

56 was also the last year DeSoto offered the accessory bumper tips, for
those who wanted then to show. Most cars had them hidden. Stock size
was 2", but I bell mine out to 2.5" for better flow. I am the guy who thinks
that unless the factory made specific provisions for the exhaust pipes to be
visible, they should be hidden. DeSotos were upscale elegant cars, not cheap
hotrods. Doctors, Lawyers, and Indian Chiefs drove DeSotos. Not gum-smacking
teenyboppers. It is easy to take the pipes out the back alongside the springs,
turn down at a 45º angle just ahead of the bumper and cut the pipe off flush
with the bottom edge. They will be out of sight to all but those who kneel to
look, but will give a good sound echo off the pavement and clear the gasses
downward to minimize backdraft on the chrome to minimize etching/pitting.

The ones in that photo do NOT match any of the four exhaust "deflectors" shown at the top of page C-6 of the 1956 Mopar Accessories catalogue in my hands.

Hence my question.

very cool. Thanks for posting. Looks like I have the Super Deluxe Streamlined. Will be delivered today but I still think they may not fit the pipes on my car.

The factory version that came on my dad's '56 Plymouth would fit more than one size tail pipe. They looked the same, or similar to the Super Deluxe one in the booklet. They did not fit over the pipe, but were attached with a strap around the pipe. The exhaust did not go through the tip, it was deflected downward.

Here is the "Super Deluxe" on a RestoModded 56 D500 CRL 2dr. Personally, I am going towards the ones in the second photo on a D500 Coronet:

Here's a few pictures. Sounds like these are similar to what was on your dad's Plymouth. Looks like they will fit up to a 2 1/4" pipe so this should work on my car. I'll have to add a little extension to get them past the bumper but that's ok.

we had ricers even back then...

I guess you didnt want to have to clean the carbon out of them all the time...

Yeah, pipes will definitely stay cleaner this way. Might kick up some dust though since they point down.

Welcome, dlyle!

Your FireFlite is great!

Check out the National DeSoto Club if you haven't already. There's a ton of info to be had there and at this site as well, if you're ever in need.

I checked out your "dougscars" site, and I'm especially envious of your Hillman Husky MKI, and your Sea Fury. Those finned boats are the perfect addition to our big finned beasts.

Enjoy your awesome DeSoto!

I did join the NDC club a few weeks back.   That and this website are great resources.   I love the finned boat.   Just got it a couple of weeks ago so I'm just learning about it.
