One of the reasons I removed my drivers door inside panel was so I could remove the door lock and take it into the lock shop to get a door lock key made (car came without any keys - previously I took the ignition switch/lock into them to get an ignition key made).

With the panel off late yesterday afternoon, didn't actually get to investigate the door lock. I did that today (after peeling off the inner door paper liner).

Okay. I need the secret decoder ring for this one:

a) I can barely see into the door by the lock, let alone figure out how to remove it. I presume that there is a magic clip that holds it. But I am not sure.

b) even if I can figure out the clip, I am not sure what tools that I would need to remove it and then later replace it.

Any pointers to hints, diagrams, etc. would be appreciated.

This is what I am trying to remove, PN 1649537. I think the retainer is PN 1455716 (but I can't find a photo of one)

Phoned my 77 year old 55 years in the Mopar business NOS parts guy, Ron W., about something that I am looking for ((dimmer switch for the 56 Dodge Custom Royal Powerflite instrument panel) 1688788) and while he was on the phone I quizzed him about removing the door lock. He has a 55 Custom Royal Convertible and thought it would be some form of clip near the edge of the inner door. When I went out to the garage I soon located the clip access hole near the edge of the door. I started prying it with a flat blade screw driver. (Prying the clip towards the back of the car). I should have sprayed PB Blaster or liquid wrench in there because the clip was kind of rusted into position. After a few trys without the sprays, the clip moved to the left (towards the back of the car) with a noticeable "bang". I then took the lock out and drove to a locksmith. They keyed the door lock to the ignition key for $20.

I mentioned the clip and its letting go with a bang to the locksmith. I said that I didn't know where the clip went. The locksmith figured that I would find it inside the door, at the bottom.

Wrong dog breath, the clip was cleverly designed: it sits in a channel that is spot welded to the inside of the outer door skin. The clip can only slide left or right (back or forward) in the channel. At first the clip didn't want to budge from its new "open" position but I sprayed some anti-rust lubricant (Mopar Combustion Chamber cleaner) and worked the clip back and forth a few times. I anticipate that tomorrow, it will be much easier to move and I will be able to get the lock back in place and then locked in with the captured clip.

Clever design.

Okay. Maybe *TOO* clever. Back to needing the secret decoder ring. I tried moving the clip back and forward to get it limber. Then I installed the lock. There is an in-out grove in the top of the lock above the pin case that has to match up with a tang on the clip *AND* you have to guide the long locking/unlocking rod into place (there is a clever peep hole in the edge of the door to help with that). There is also a left-right grove in the lock that the clip has to find its way into when you slide the clip forward. With the lock in place I tried to move the clip in the forward position to lock it in place. NO dice. Tried removing and reinstalling 3 times and failed each time. Definitely need more lubrication. Might have to push on the lock eustation and compress the rubber gasket.

Or something

Saw the inside of a 55 Custom Royal Driver's door today. It had a separate/loose horizontal "U" clip holding the lock to the door. Hmm...Might have to get me one of them.

You mention a rubber gasket on the lock . . . what rubber gasket? There shouldn't be one as far as I know. That may be the issue.

The gasket is round and flat and sit between the stainless steel "bezel" (not the right word but...) around the actual portion that you put the key into and the body.

It was there when I pulled the lock out so I presume that it needs to be there.

That is correct. Small rubber gasket between the outer bezel and the outer door skin right? I thought nearly all Mopars had this?

Well with the door interior restoration, window channel replacement and door panel restoration now complete, I needed to install the door handle and the door lock (and the two stainless trim pieces that I took off). I got the handle on (two 3/8" nuts) but FAILED again to get the lock installed. I have it semi-jammed in there but the retention clip will NOT slide to the right (forward direction) enough to lock into position. GETTING FRUSTRATED.

I could remove the rubber gasket but I know that it was there to begin with.

Does this help... out of a '56 plymouth manual but probably the same/similar?

Very much the same. I am doing what needs to done, except I better read the bit about the key in the lock. That is new to me.

Thanks for posting, Dan.

Well, I re-read that bit about the key in the lock, etc. and tried it. Didn't help

What eventually did work was I removed the gasket between the lock and the door skin. Even then it was a bit of a struggle. Eventually I pushed hard enough (seemed like way too hard) on the retainer clip and it clicked into locked position. Yeah.

Now I can move on and close in the door with vapour barrier and install my "restored" door panel.

Almost two years later and I am painting the outside of the front passenger door. That meant that I *HAD TO* check for rust in the door and, potentially, perforations. (Found none, cleaning and caring for the door will be a topic of another post)

While the door was open (panels off, etc), I remembered that I had to remove the lock cylinder and get it re-keyed to the new ignition key. At least I had a clue this time. That said it took a bit of work (and a lot of MOOVIT) to get the sliding lock plate to move. Like the driver's door, when the plate did release it did so with a bit of a bang. Took the lock cylinder to the same lock place that I had the other one done. Took almost a day but the charge was only $15.

Installing it was easier this time. I had been moving the lock plate a few times each day since I took the lock out so the plate was sliding nicely. Because the door was open, I could reach inside the door and guide the square lock cylinder extension rod into the lock mechanism very easily. Pushed the locking plate to the front of the car to lock the cylinder in place. Easy peasy.

PS: There was no rubber gasket between the round stainless steel lock cylinder trim and the door so I didn't have to struggle with that and then give up like last time.
