Location: Parts Unknown | Our first dog was named Cora. Then there was a kennel full of them, .... Leroy, Cookie were a few of the names I remember. Felix, Edgar, Klaus, Fritz, and Adolph followed. After that it was Lamont, Shanti, and Grady. We had a number of different colored houses over the years too.

Expert Posts: 1622 Location: Seville, OH | Doctor DeSoto - 2017-01-09 11:08 AM Oh, so YOU'RE the one who took the last pilot's license ! I actually started my flight school at Paine Field, but when I went down to check out my plane for my solo cross country, it was padlocked closed due to bankruptcy. Fortunately, I was paying as I went, but a lot of students had money on account that they all lost. Did they close the school at Harvey? Probably so, it was a Cessna school, but you could rent a Piper Cub too. Edited by Swept57 2017-01-09 11:23 AM

Expert Posts: 1287 | Rob -- That Phoenix truly is a magnificent automobile: an accurately restored red 2-dr H/T (with just that touch of white trim), ram 383, swivels, and no dorky wire wheels that are supposed to be "period correct." I hope it's not a "tribute car" such as that recreation of Dave Strickler's '61 Chevy 2-dr post 409 CID "Old Reliable" (a neat car in itself, but just a clone). Do you know if it's legit? Even though my first automotive love affair was the '60 Fury, that Dart is a much better looking car than my Big-Tailed Beast. But the Mecum car would not be a good one for me as I would flog it -- there's nothing like twin 4V's suckin' air, dual exhausts trumpeting, and white walls smokin'! Nice car, indeed. Joe Godec

Expert Posts: 1287 | Dave -- A nice automobile. I wonder if there was a build record with car? It would be a sweet deal indeed if it really were a D-500 in spite of the very amateurish application of the two "scare emblems." I wonder what the '60 Phoenix will go for? Joe

Location: Parts Unknown | I have had friends over the years that I would call "car whores". They own cars not because they seek out and find. Rather, the cars just drop in their lap. It might be a 52 Chevy sedan, or a 41 Cadillac, or a 57 NY'er ... ... doesn't matter. It's an old car and they have no strong attachment to brand, year, body type, color, anything .... it just doesn't matter. In a way, I think it would be a whole lot easier to go through life being so adaptable to whatever happens to cross one's path. On the flip side, there's me ! Picky-ass SOB where any number of criteria are applied and only a VERY select few make the cut. All others are unacceptable. Some are frustratingly close to "right", but one thing or another just rule them right out. This is one of them. This one has canted headlights, Astra-dome dash, it's a ragtop, it not only a 300, it's an "H', ... and it's one of only 123 built. Hard to beat that, right ? But it has this one ink-filled, piss-on-any-parade, ruin-the-whole-show problem ! It is red, it has those ugly black-out headlight backings, but WTF ? It has no fins !!! It is a finned car with the fins shaved off ! Granted, the factory did it. It IS a real car and perhaps a real nice example. But it's got no fins !!!! That's like the most convincingly beautiful woman asking YOU for a date, except it's actually a dude ! The perfect dinner, with a turd on the plate. A wonderful piece of land, but it used to be a radioactive waste dump. For this guy, some things just cannot be overruled. I found a car just like this one ... same color and everything, sitting on the street in Ukiah, California. I was hunting for my DeSoto. For a lot of people I have known, the DeSoto hunt would have been over right there. Buy the 300 and just roll with it. Could not do it. Without fins, it just isn't the same ! Without fins, it is no longer of interest. So close, but yet so far. There are times when I really wish I could be more of a car whore. Life WOULD be that much easier !

Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | I like the '62 Chrysler better than any except the '60. Now if the '62 had the '60 front end without the canted headlights, WOW! That would be my cup of tea - no fins, just clean, smooth lines - I'd love it.

What I see with a 62 are muddled styling ideas, clashing in my opinion. A car with clean, smooth line would be a 1996 Ford Taurus. Help me understand your way of looking at this.

Expert Posts: 2002 Location: Branson, MO | Just my own preferences Doc. You have yours and I have mine. Sometimes we agree and sometimes we don't and that's what makes us individuals. I couldn't care less if the '62 300 is a letter car or not - they look the same to me and I'd be satisfied with either one but like I indicated, I'd like them better if they had the '60 front end without the canted headlights.

Location: Parts Unknown | I am not trying to impress MY preferences over yours. Rather, I am looking to learn something about a viewpoint that just isn't obvious to me. No pissing match desired. Just good "argument" for a different viewpoint. As an example, the swept-over curve at the fin tip of a 57-58 DeSoto/Chrysler strikes me as one of the cars' most elegant design points. Another, the way the color sweep of the 57 DeSoto matches the profile of 2HT roof makes it the best- ever two-toning design of the 50's. How would you cite the favorable attributes of the 62 Chrysler ? And ANYONE can jump in here. I am asking for reason-backed opinions from anyone.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | I think the back end of the 62's are great(going finless) and they last even on the 880 Custom for 63. Not a fan of the those diagonal headlights... or the pignose Desoto. I agree on the 57 Desoto and it can pull off same body color wheel covers which is not an easy task. most look dumb. I have to admit I think the 58 Desoto is probably the best... Ford quickly ripped that one off with their 58. I wonder if they got a tip off on the Desoto design, its pretty close but typical ford ulgy awkward...
