Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | Hey Guys, Went to DMV to get wife's 59 Dodge registered. What seemed like a simple thing, take it off non-opt status and register it so it will be legal for on road use. I was there 5 days before the end of the yearly non-opt time frame. I was told I would have to pay for the 2016 yr fees because I was 5 days too early. Are you *hitting me ??? Now I'm starting to get a bit aggravated. Wife kept telling me to calm down. I have a period correct black Calif. license plate. I Was told I couldn't use that plate because it has 1963 stamped on it. It needs to have 1959 stamped on it. Now my blood press is rising! " Get your supervisor, I'm not listening to anymore of this insanity" She pulls out a book of rules. 59 - 63 has no rules, its in a gray area. Now I have to fill out another form so this plate can be used, and come back again. With both plates. For what reason ?? Sure as *ell can't put only 1 plate on the car. I was still *issed when I got back home over this mess. Geeeze !!! Jerry PS, another DMV horror story !!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | All DMVs are like this.. absurd... So I ask about getting a car out of state inspected... lady says It has to be a complete running car... What? Im like what? no... she calls and says it has to be mainly there now? This little old lady is going to inspect the car mechanically? She was fighting everything.. Same stuff here in ohio dealing with old cars they freak out.

Location: Parts Unknown | Can't speak for California, but I can tell you that when I had my wrecking yard, I was "tight" with the gals that worked at my local licensing agency. They knew me well and helped me navigated the BS that disinterested clerks can drag you through to cover their ass. You might contact John Fowlie and see if he enjoys any good relations with his local DMV team and perhaps can advise on how to approach your mission.

I had some same BS last year when I went to register and license a BRAND NEW Ram 3500. No one seemed to know what tonnage to put on it or how to go about doing it even. They had to call Des Mines for instructions!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9666 Location: So. Cal | Jerry, regarding your black plates: You can only register your car with them if they are the current plates that are on the DMV records as belonging to that car. If you have some other black plates from a different car, they won't do it. You can put old plates on your car that don't belong to your car only under the "Year Of Manufacture" program that requires you to only put plates that match your car's year of manufacture, in other words, Yellow plates with a '59 sticker/plate on it. Otherwise, you have to use new plates. This YOM program has a yearly fee associated with it too, but the correct, original black plates do not. So the DMV person was telling you the correct thing if these black plates were not originally registered to your car. The plates of record should be listed on your last non-op statement so you can verify which plates it last had on it. I believe the plates are also listed on your title. At least they used to be, but I am not sure about the newer titles. In the past, some attendants used to be willing to apply any set of black plates to any '69-older car. But they weren't supposed to, and the DMV has cracked down on them. I am currently looking for a single DFF 403 black plate that is registered to my car so I can get it licensed with them.

Expert Posts: 1740 Location: Alaska | I had a real hassle with Calif. DMV getting a title transfer. I bought a british sports car (74 Jensen Healy) that had not been licensed for over 10 years. the old owner gave me the title that had been signed over by a previous owner but not transferred. I thought no problem, (at least in my state). But Calif. would not reissue it. I contacted the old owner of record and he was nice enough to try and transfer it for me, no luck. The car had a very simple serial# of 14xxx and because it had not been licensed for many years, Ca. DMV had used that # to title a home built trailer and they would not reissue my title even though I had it in my hand! I had to pay one of those title services to get a new one in my home state.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | I bought the car out of state, had no trouble getting a Cal title and putting it on non-opt status. There was no license plate with the car. DMV has no record of this car prior to me getting a title. The black plates came off a 64 Riviera parts car I've had for over 30 yrs. It has fallen out of their sys, so they have no record of this car or the plates. We'l see what happens when I go back on Tues. Jerry

Location: Parts Unknown | It seems to be a popular trend with the younger set to show up at a public office or venue with enough firepower to overtake a Taliban outpost and uncork a whole heap of mayhem. Don't take this off your list of options as you try and keep up with what "the kids" are doing these days.

The only way those plates can be used if they are used with the YOM program, although if DMV has issued those plate numbers for a motorcycle or such, they are only good for wall hangings. I had a really helpful gal at the Colusa DMV, but after she retired, there is an assortment of counter people, and problems can ensue. There is a woman that was a DMV employee for many years before retiring, she does problem registrations for people as her new business, and also goes to DMV herself to do them. Usually about $300 a car, but it beats wasting my time in line time and time again. If you go this route, let me know, I'll get you here contact info. ---John

Location: Oakdale, CA | any car in CA that fits the definition of "collector" car and is 25 years old or older is exempt from having to file non-op therefore is exempt from back fees, as long as it has not been on the road. Look up motor vehicle code 4604(d)3 Let me know if you have any questions. Bill
