Figured i'd post this up in the proper area, instead of general like i had! I've also obtained a new program for my iPhone that lets me do batches of photos and shrink them to fit here (its called cropsize), so now i have a ton of pictures to post. First up, the car!

My dad bought it back in the 90's from forum member DEH, well before any of us knew about the internet. I was 16 at the time i think. DEH bought the car for the 325 as his 57 dodge needed a proper motor and this one had been rebuilt at some point. We bought the rest and kept it in outdoor storage for a few years. Then we moved to a new property and Dad started to work on it for a bit. He bought the front end rebuild parts and sent the spindles into magnum force for them to setup their disc brake conversion. He kept trucking on it for a while, welding in replacement metal in the floor and collecting stuff until around 2002.... Then.... his other project came home, a 1968 GTX convertible and the desoto was put away in our barn. Its been living down there ever since.

Well fast forward to earlier this year and i finally decide i'd like to do something with the 392 Hemi i picked up 15 years ago, i had been collecting a few things for it, mostly a hot heads intake and a QEC trans adapter for a 727. Soooo we decided to go in on the desoto. As it stands my 392 is at the machine shop having .030 Keith Black pistons put in it due to a .013 taper in the bores, along with having the Rod's refreshed and resized with new ARP waveloc rod bolts. The rotating assembly is getting rebalanced with the new pistons, then i'll be picking it up and finishing up the short block and moving on to the heads. The crank did not need to be turned! Current plans for are as follows.

.030 over 10:1 Keith black Hypereutetic pistons
Mildly ported 392 heads
Hot Heads intake
Holley 750 carb
Howards Cams .470/221/110LSA cam (very nice mid range)
Chrysler SB electronic Ignition (already have it modded for the 392)
A518 (aka 46RH) overdrive auto with A and A trans pushbutton cable and a few upgrades to help hold the torque. 2000ish stall lock up converter, LU and OD controlled by a compushift Mini.
3.90 or 4.10 Sure grip in a 65 c-body 8 3/4
Magnum force 11.75" wilwood conversion with the widest rotors i've seen in a while. Will do the rear's later for a full wilwood setup.
Full rebuild on the suspension, the big T-bars if i can find them, otherwise running the 952/953 set i have. Adding front and rear sway bars.
17" torq thrusts with a 26.7" black wall, most likely BFG Comp-2's. Cheap, decent wear and grip. Might go steelies for a bit to keep costs down during the initial buildout.
68 new yorker 2dr buckets/arm rest up front and in the rear if i can make it work. The seats are red and in good condition, these should blend in decently with black carpet and the rest of the 516 interior. If i like how it turns out, ill have them recovered in the proper 516 material later.
A quick and dirty paint job to get it moving, the pictures show about all thats left of the OEM paint unfortunately, the clip is bare and the drivers side is in primer. i may just prime to get her on the road and leave the original paint intact with that for now. Ugly is fun right?

enjoy the pictures, ill post more updates as they happen.

Ok heres round 2 of pictures, this is the 392 stuff. The farthest the motor had ever been apart was one of the heads came off in 99 when i got the motor, i replaced a head gasket. Otherwise it looks like its never been rebuilt/apart. The bad rocker arm you see is from driving the car without cleaning out the rocker shafts and arms for proper oiling. That was a year of use (5-6,000) miles. I didn't know it needed to be done back in 1999. I have spares to replace the 2 that i killed that way.

Threw in the brake stuff at the end.

Looks like a fun project. I have a 518 trans ready to go in my garage that I was going to put into my '57 Windsor. But after driving around the '58 Desoto for a while, I realized that I would much rather have a park function than I would like the overdrive. There are many stories of cars that have met their final fate because of a poorly operating park brake, and the brake on my Desoto is really twitchy. It holds well, but if you bump it even a little, it will release, and off you go. For that reason, I always drove around with a block of wood to wedge under the wheel. It was a pain and my wife didn't have the strength to pull the park brake enough to make it work well, so she couldn't drive the car for that reason. So now, I plan to use a '62-'65 trans with a park cable and replace the guts with a '66-up 727 with an extra-low 1st gear and a gear vendor overdrive on the end. More expensive than my 518 for sure, but you get overdrive, park and push buttons. I put a 700R4 into my '56 Savoy, and I really love the overdrive feature of the trans. I was going to hook it up to the push buttons too, but I didn't because I didn't want to lose the park feature. So I shift it with a cable mounted under the dash, so I can get all the gears as well as park. But I lost the push-button control. Anyway, something for you to think about.

I need to get a 392 rebuilt pretty soon for my New Yorker, so it looks like we will be rebuilding one at the same time.

Nice cast-iron Hi rise intake on that 392 It's probably almost a 1 of 1 these days. What brand of overdrive are you planning on using behind the automatic? I'm in the process of putting together a 354 Hemi and trying to decide on which transmission a 4 speed with and overdrive seems to be the way but I'm only researching that now myself.

I've been thinking about the park brake as well, it makes me nervous. I have a floor shifter for a 727 I can use and I would get park but man, The buttons!!! I should just use the ugly b and m for park. I haven't made a decision yet on it thpugh, I don't even have the 518 yet. The 62-65 would get you both, but with that low first and GV, that's a 6k trans pretty fast. New gear sets are not cheap for the 727. I wish the 904/A500 worked, those have a cheap 2.77 first and don't eat HP for breakfast, but the darn starter mounts to high.

Post up your build for the New Yorker when it happens and use the aluminum heads you picked up. I wish I could afford a set.

That intake is available from hot heads right now for $325, it flows really nice and it shaves a 25 lbs of weight If I remember right. The only bad thing is that it doesn't have the generator bosses so you have to figure out a new alternator mount.
http://hothemiheads.com/intake_manifolds/hot_heads_intake_flat.html

Trans wise my plan is to use the factory Chrysler overdrive that came in 2wd trucks w/ a 360from 92-95 (vans too). Scroll to the end of this thread to see my big post on what to Do.

The block is moving along nicely, stopped by to drop off a few parts at the shop handed me this bag, this is what he pulled from the water jackets... after I had cleaned it out and he had tanked the block a few times. Yikes.

Bonus pictures of what makes up the wilwood kit (part numbers).

"Muscatel Maroon Metallic", not often seen but very good looking. The dash and gauges look to be in great shape. Congrats on getting your 392 back, I know from experience they can be a little expensive to build. Nice to see your progress!

Is that a 3 or 8 pin transmission? Some of the 95's were 8 pin.(computer controlled)

Its a 3 pin, i double checked before i pulled it, the van also listed 46RH on its engine bay options sticker. The 8 pin would be a 46RE.

Man I feel bad that all I have to share right now is old pictures, we will be getting this out of the barn next month and starting real work on it. In the meantime, here are some pics of the car back in 1996 when we got it. The white garage to the left in the first pic, has a 60 desoto fire flight 2dr in it, white w/ red interior. She was the original owner, the family wouldn't sell the car to us when she passed away a few years later. It was a great survivor car, don't know what happened to it afterwords.
