Hi. I want to replace the old timey distributor (autolite 1BP4003F) Distributor on my 318 with a new electronic distributor. I'm done with dinking around with points and condensers and whatnot. Can somebody point me in the direction of a unit that is a proven application? I know the dizzy's for the later 318 LA blocks are interchangeable, right??? Thanks!

You are correct, a modern distributor from a LA block mopar will drop right in and work in your 318 Poly. You can use an updated Mopar distributor, go aftermarket with a MSD, or update your stock distributor with a Pertronix electronic ignition conversion kit (Ignitor I, II or III). I updated my stock distributor with a Pertronix kit and immediately had improved starting and smoother running.

All of the Mopar related parts are readily available in every parts house in the nation....pertronix?? not so much...
You can use the Mopar performance package, P3690426 or you can use boneyard parts.
It is easy to set up and very reliable.

I am using this exact type on my dodge, no problems

I would get the female type cap if I were to buy another one (looks closer to stock)

Hola --- I like The Bone Yard Hint. Any 1972 or newer 318 found in any Dodge Truck or Dodge Van is what you need.

You will need a Distributor Wrench and $50.

The Pertronix will only work with the dual point distributors. Something to keep in mind. I personally like to use the later electronic with a GM HEI module attached so I developed and sell these kits. http://www.designed2drive.com

I am glad you mentioned the limitation on the Pertronix. My mechanic thought that's what I should do with my 318 poly. I will let him know.

Your conversion looks good Powerflite

But only if you already hve an electronic distributor.

Although, you could do the same to make an electronic assist (still has points, but the module fires the coil)

The distributor I linked above is the same as what your making in an electronic sense.

I am curious what this oil pump adaptor is? I never changed anything when swapping my points distributor out to the
linked one, bypassed the ballast, put a 12V non resistor coil on, put the dizzy and leads on and went.

What does this adaptor do?

It is in reference to using the newer distributor in an older hemi motor like the 315, 325, 331, 354, or 392 because these motors had distributors with longer shafts on them. It isn't needed for the 318 or 270 or 241. But the conversion shaft won't work in a 354 poly because it uses a different oil pump in it.

....not ALL 354 P..........most of the 354 had a 'normal' main cap but one must verify the existing dist shaft length before swapping parts.
The main cap is fatter, the oil pump is OK.
