Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | When I got my 57 sedan it had the optional 2nd ashtray on the passenger side. Well at least it had the surround and the tray rails. Unfortunately the actual tray itself had gone missing. So it was on my list to get a replacement. Well it didn't take me long to figure out the standard driver's side ashtray that they all came with wasn't going to work. They are very different. Yep I was searching for a small piece of unobtanium. So I took the surround off and resigned myself to forget about it. Well low and behold I found one. In Australia of all places (thanks James). I just installed and it looks great. Elite Veteran Posts: 963 Location: San Antonio, TX | Ah... did not know that. I forget sometimes about looking at 58's for parts. I should cast my net a bit wider. Well I'm happy to have found it. I like the way they look. But now you have me thinking... did any 57's come with it? Or was mine added later? It's a very original and complete car. However lots can happen over 60 years. I do know that my car sold new on Oct 29, 1957. Fairly late... maybe they were putting that 2nd tray in by then? Edited by macedon 2016-12-17 11:33 AM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | I understand that it was a rare option in '57, but that it could have been ordered with it. I am going off of what I have heard from others since I have never owned a '57. You could answer the question for your car with the build sheet. As far as them putting options in for free, I doubt it, unless it was a part of a spring special package.

Elite Veteran Posts: 769 Location: Oley, PA | That looks great! it looks really clean too. Back in the day when pretty much everyone smoked, a second ashtray was probably a nice option to have. A good reminder of how much things have changed. A few months ago, my 11 year old stepson asked me why my '59 Windsor has a "cell phone charging port." I had to explain to him what a cigarette lighter was.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 537 Location: Upstate NY | My 57 has a lighter in the back of the front seat (4dr sdn) as I am sure all do. In the bottom of the ashtray I found a 1960 penny along with a bunch of cigarette butts. Remember all the cigarette commerciials back then?

Location: The Mile High City | I saw that auction on eBay. Perfect! Looks like it found a good home. And your use of it was ideal, because the surround was too pitted for your car. Wow! an airconditioned De Soto! Rare indeed. Is the air conditioning unit in working order? Edited by Lancer Mike 2016-12-17 10:19 PM

Expert Posts: 1488 Location: New Castle PA | Dave, I've wondered about the 2nd ashtray myself. In fact, I think I have one in one of my parts boxes. It came from a 1957, and I, too, have seen them installed in 1957 models. However, I can't find it listed anywhere as part of an options package. It is possible, as you mentioned, that many owners wanted them and installed them or had them installed from a '58. I just don't know. In any case, it's nice touch.

Elite Veteran,, James Passed away March 2021, He will be Missed Posts: 1028 Location: Melbourne, Australia | To my knowledge they aren't standard on all 58 desotos Models , they are standard i believe on all fireflites and adventurers , but I may be wrong . But I think on firesweep and firedome they were part of one of the glamour packs or the like . So glad you received it dave . All the rare 58 Desoto goodies from Australia are about to run out ! Expert 5K+ Posts: 9605 Location: So. Cal | Anyone want another one? Here is a '58 Firedome dash for sale with the ash tray. I believe this is from Bo. http://www.ebay.com/itm/192056305334?ul_noapp=true

Location: The Mile High City | My '58 Firedome has one, and I received the decodes and IBM punch card from Chrysler - but no mention of the ash tray specifically - as noted, it might be part of an accessory group. It makes for an excellent coin and small parts holder! Edited by Lancer Mike 2016-12-18 11:47 AM
