Thought i would ask first rather then bend or break hidden or unknown clips..

Now gonna start a tear down on my 59 CRL, So need Do's and Dont's

1. Front Outer windshield Trim, I know the sides screw on, i am sure the lower trim is bolted with access required by removing the stainless Cowl,, BUT what about the Upper Windshield Trim, Is it just clipped or is it bolted from inside the roof ??

2. The Wide Roof Gutter Trim, I see the single rear screw, Is this trim just clipped over the gutter as appears no clips to the roof, do i pull from the bottom or top is so to unclip it..

3. The Wide Beltline trim,, Is all of this bolted from inside the panels or clipped like the Coronet, ?? I am sure the front fender i can see a nut on the rear..

Any Tips anyone thinks i should be aware of in advance,, I will update Questions as i go as well if i need more advise on a certain trim..

Thanks in Advance.. Clive

Rather than start a New Thread... I will also ask here,,

Gonna remove the Windshield, And i have fitted Windshields on british classics years ago using a strong piece of string process,, But got to admit i dont fancy this one as this has the Top Bubble Windshield as well as the side curves,, But what or Where do you start with fitting the windshield, i read somewhere it was suggested to fit the top first then working down the sides,,
I have always put the bottom in first working the sides to the top on british stuff, but these were mainly flat glass...

Clive -

For the 453 windshield, which is used on all '59 hardtops and converts, you slip the top edge into the rubber, then come down the sides and finally install the glass in the bottom. Use a nylon or wooden drift to get the windshield into the rubber lip. Never use anything metal.

So you fit the Rubber to the car and then work the Glass into the rubber then Ron.. I have heard this method before,,

With british flat glass we used to put the rubber on the glass and the nylon string inside the rubber and then pull the string through inside the car,, But has a good idea it isnt done on these,,

Should also say i am fitting a NEW Windshield (453) into the car before it goes to paint,, Was there mention of the new Windshields being slightly thicker or thinner than the originals ?? or from memory is the New Glass lipped slightly meaning inner glass is slightly bigger than outer glass to accommodate a proper seating in the rubber..

Glass has come direct from Finland , same comany that supplies a few USA stockists

Clive the gutter trim if same as the 58 is a one piece trim that you have to remove the upper door window seal screws as this sandwiches the trim under the gutter?

Main problem replacing glass is the rubber being old and hard,

Here's how I do them firstly go around the lip of car with some butyl sealing strip then push rubber onto lip of car, then go around the fubber making sure the securing lip is free all the way around, then with some help lift glass into top lip of rubber and allow glass to rest in place while working the rubber lip out down sides and across bottom, some slippy spray will come in handy , I used to use wd40 but was told it rotted the rubber?
Then when you have the glass in the channel all way round you can put some windshield sealer in the gap and start to close up the rubber, if you use the proper windscreen sealer is stays soft , don't use anything silicone based as does not stick to glass?

Thanks Paul,,
I took my time this afternoon to look carefully at the Roof Gutter trim and yes you are correct in how it fitted, More or less sussed how all the trim comes off without damaging anything now,,

I cant see no Locking bead in the window rubber, So presume its just a full compound rubber,,
What method do people use best to remove the Windshield without damage, and NO not cutting the rubber,, I dont really want to remove internal Trim and slowly push the rubber out with windshield, but thats the only way i can see,, Unless i do the 2 feet method inside the car and just push the glass out, as it has a minor crack and a central stone chip, Hence the New Glass ready..

Hi Clive,

If you look closely at rubber you can see the line all the way round, look at your fist picture just above the scuttle you can see a line in the rubber, that's where they are locked together, use a small screwdriver in the line and you will soon get it coming apart, after all the years it becomes blended into one rubber, you will either damage rubber or crack glass pushing it out otherwise?

Yes, that's what you do. I would recommend installing windshield after painting.

Hi Clive,

Paul.

Thanks Paul,,

I had a quick look tonight and the rubber came open real easy , luckily the rubber is nice and pliable still, I guess cos on 59 CRL Dodges its covered by all the wide stainless trim, Gonna borrow a pair of window suckers this week to remove the windshield, as easier to handle with them..

Thanks again for the Heads up,, As i had no idea it pulled out like that,, Hopefully this thread will help others as well..

Clive
