My plan is to have a dual exhaust system made at a local muffler shop, either in 2.25" or 2.5" diameter aluminized pipe with Flow Master of MagnaFlow mufflers. I would probably want to find the original style D500 tips but that isn't a big deal for me. The tips will be tasteful and chrome.

I am seriously considering adding catalytic converters to the system (I was an environmental engineer so it will be hard not to have cats on this car)(I know that a carb'd engine with no O2 sensor feed back is not optimal but yet I feel the obligation).

What have others done in this situation?

??

I had Waldrons Exhaust in Michigan make me a new system for my 58 Coronet. All bends are to factory specs and the fit was spot on. They can supply the system with the muffler of your choice, from OEM to glasspacs. Me, I wanted an OEM fit and appearance. A muffler shop job can range from excellent to lousy depending on the ability of the faricator/installer.

It seems that the factory dual exhausts had a couple of engineering compromises:

1. The right side has a form of heat shield above the right muffler. Nothing above the left muffler. Should I add something while I am there?

2. The left tailpipe is *VERY* close to the left side of the gas tank. Probably not an issue but it seems like a heat shield between or a insulating wrap on the tailpipe would be a better idea.

I was given a verbal estimate for a new 2.5" dual exhaust system from the manifold back at between $650 and $850 depending on bending issues over the back axle. Adding two catalytic converters would add $300.

In the short term I am just going to replace a 3 ft (probably 32") straight section of the right side downstream of the back axle. The diameter seems to be 1.75" (??)

I was able to actually drive the 56 CR D500 to the local (and recommended) muffler shop yesterday for a real estimate for a new system (based on having the car on a muffler hoist). Apparently most of the current system is 1 7/8". We only talked 2" and 2.5" yesterday. $650 for a full manifold to bumper 2" dual system (it has factory duals) or $560 if I don't want a new 2" pipe from the manifold to right muffler. It is already 2" on the right and it is in good shape (left is only 1 7/8" and a bit punky so it will have to be replaced with 2" for sure).

Do you think 2" will be good enough? I was thinking 2" or 2.5" but I am told 2" is easier to work with and using 2.5" will result in some decreased diameter where they bend the bits that go up and over the rear axle. It's not like I will be racing this thing.

I forgot to ask what mufflers they would be using. (Duh). Subsequently somebody has suggested Flowmaster 50 series sound awesome on a 56 D500. I am sure that was not in the muffler shop's estimate. Any other suggested mufflers and/or pipe sizes to consider?

Two inch should be plenty for a single carburetor, 325" V8. The heat shield was put there by factory engineers and that tells me it was necessary or they would not have added the cost. I have used Waldron too, numerous times. The slotted oval exhaust tips are reproduced two places. The Fennessey's reproduce them for Studebakers as they were sourced from a industry supplier originally. $90 each. Kanter Industries also reproduces them and they are stainless steel and $90 PAIR. I just got a pair from Kanter. Chrysler 300s also used these tips. I have Flowmasters on the '56 Dodge I bought and I will get rid of them in favor of Magnaflows.

Oh, and don't concern yourself about the pipe being close to the fuel tank. By the time the exhaust has traveled that far it has cooled greatly. Now worries.

Thanks for the comments. The 56 is a 315 rather than 325 like the 57 D500, implying 2" is even better for me.

I tried to find a photo of the Kanter ED MOP1 exhaust tips but found nothing.

What is the issue with the Flowmasters and why are you going to go Magnaflow next? Just curious.

I wouldn't go less than 2 1/4. The 318 Dakota motors use this size, and your motor is about the same size. 2" will definitely work, but if you increase the performance later, you will appreciate having a little bigger size.

Kanter 04915C $49 here. On ebay $90 pair.
https://www.kanter.com/productdetail.aspx?DeptNo=1000&MakeName=Chrys... Find them on ebay for pic of the face of the deflector.

I simply don't care for the tinny sound of Flows. And find a lot of people agree with me.

Pretty much everyone chooses FlowMaster mufflers for their sound, not performance. Which happens to be 'good' because there are better flowing mufflers out there for less money.

Why not add an O2-sensor bung and gauge kit in the exhaust while you're at it?
Being able to properly tune the engine in all rpm ranges will greatly improve drivability and mileage, and will also lengthen the life of the cats if you really want to install those.
