I am so close to trying to start my 56 D-500 that I can taste the rich exhaust fumes. One of the last things to do is tighten down the restored WCFB carburetor. At the moment the nuts are just finger tight because I was going to replace them with new stainless steel nuts. I found a match of the nut to 5/16", 20 threads/inch at my local hardware chain (RONA - like a Lowes or Home Despot) but they had no stock of the nuts, neither in regular steel or stainless. Same at Lowes and Home Depot and ACE Hardware. All they have is 18 or 24. So I called two fastener specialty shops local to me this morning. Same answer: 18 or 24, no 20. "Must be an OEM thing sir, its not standard".

Okay, so what are my options? I could clean up and paint these nuts if I have to but I would rather use new ones.

(Help?)

Thanks. Trying to stay OE as much as possible for now (with some exceptions). I had a look at the McMaster Carr catalog and nothing jumps out, i.e. no 5/16" x 20 (1/2" hex head) nuts

https://www.mcmaster.com/#hex-nuts/=14vsjk6

I've emailed them for help.

While I was working on my vintage balloon tire bike the other day I needed a nut. I thought, no problem, I have an ample supply of misc. hardware. After all it was just a 5/16" nut, right...
After not being able to match it, I pulled out the thread gauge. 5/16-20, no problem, or so I thought. 5/16-18 is standard, but 5/16-20 is an oddball... After some head scratching, I turned to Google. Apparently I'm not the first person to run into this problem. Well, it turns out that an M8 x 1.25 pitch metric nut fits perfectly. These are readily available from McMaster-Carr:
# 90592A022 (Metric Plain Steel Hex Nut, Class 8, M8 Size, 1.25MM Pitch, 13MM W, 6.5MM H, Packs of 100) $4.51
# 91828A410 (Metric 18-8 Stainless Steel Hex Nut, M8 Size, 1.25MM Pitch, 13MM Width, 6.5MM Height, Packs of 50) $9.98
# 94000A039 (Metric 18-8 Stainless Steel Acorn Nut, M8 Size, 1.25MM Pitch, 13MM Width, 15MM Height, Packs of 10) $5.66
I hope this saves someone some time.

They are 20 threads per inch, and .310 in diameter, or about 5/16". I can't seem to find a ... I've looked in thread size tables and can't seem to find a 5/16 x 20 thread. Is that bolt size .... Grab a metric 8x1.25 nut and spin it on.

Thanks very much for that. I was starting to think that there might be a metric nut that would work. Now that I have your info, I can go hunting locally (no doubt 4 from Lowes will cost the same as 100 from McMaster-Carr.)

Updates:

1. I am an idiot.
2. I am an idiot
3. McMaster-Carr are idiots.

1 and 2 = went back to RONA to seek out the M8 x 1.25 nuts. Found some. Tried it on the nut/bolt testing tree that they have. Hmm...where is the 5/16" x 20 tester? They only have 5/16" x 18 and 5/16" x 24. OOops.

I think what happened the other day was that they had 5/16" x 18 nuts but no 24s. Somehow "20" stuck in my head. So I missed tracking down and installing 5/16" x 24 Stainless steel nuts yesterday

3 = McMaster-Carr wouldn't look for what I wanted because I entered a US shipping address but gave them my Canadian email address. This made them unhappy for unknown reasons.

"Hi David, We noticed that the address you provided is a forwarding location. We do not ship to forwarders, however if you provide your business we will look into this item for you and ship directly to you in Canada. Regards, Bethanie"

To which I responded:

"The address I gave is a mail drop in Point Roberts WA that I use to collect car parts for my 1956 Dodge that I am restoring. It typically means faster and quicker delivery than having things sent to my home in BC. I use it all the time. I pay the appropriate duty and taxes at the border when I return to Canada. Nobody else cares. I don't know why you would.
Good bye. Thanks for nothing. (You never did identify that you actually had what I was looking for so I don't see the point).
So much for the "famous McMaster-Carr"

In the meantime, I reused the original carb to manifold bolts, warts and all.

Did I mention that I was an idiot?

FINAL UPDATE - on this topic. Bought 5/16" x 24 nuts and lock washers at Lowes yesterday. Not stainless. Just the regular plated. Installed them. Saved the original nuts and lock washers for the next purist.

Didn't magically make my engine start. So really a waste of time. But I felt better with the new nuts, etc.
