Hey all,
Let's try this again:

I am trying to remove my horn ring, and the insides of the "wings" around the spokes are hitting the spokes before I can feel any "release" of the ring. The parts inside the column seem to be a little scrambled, I can't even tell if the original turn switch is in there still. A PO installed a hideous black plastic "signal stat" semi tractor style turn switch. Probably because they couldn't get the ring off, either.

I have tried to lightly tap it with a rubber mallet, and gently pry CCW with a screw driver. No Joy. I have looked inside the innards with a flashlight, but I can't really see much of anything that would help. Scary as all get out, and my ring is in really great shape.

Could a good soul share a pic of the back side of an applicable steering wheel, so I know what type of retainers I am fighting? Maybe offer any advice on difficulties if the guts are out of place?

Thanks to the helpful folks here.

Your FSM Should show the break down of the steering wheel assembly.

Hi, Chris:

Our steering wheels may be slightly different. On my car, I remove the center emblem by rotating it counterclockwise (this can be difficult if the spring steel clips on the bottom of the cap are crusty). Once the center emblem cap is off, I think it is just a matter of removing the three phillips head screws which hold the ring and horn button together. Once those are off, you just lift the ring right off the wheel. I will double check tonight.

Yes, Marc has it! In taking off the center cap, it doesn't matter if you depress the horn ring because those spring steel clips attach to the ring itself. I would not use tools to rotate that center cap - too easy to damage. If it is a total bear, you might try spraying WD-40 up under the cap with the little red straw (just a little!)

This is off of a Chrysler with the emblem removed but the Desoto is the same. If you were able to gently lift the edge of the center cap and break the seal of 50+ years of chrome polish, the you should be able use a rubber pad, (such as is used for tool box drawers or even a rubber glove), put it on top of the center cap, and rotate it counter-clockwise. It will move about 1 1/2" to 2" to release.

Hopefully the picture will post!

DING DING DING!

The manual says, under "Steering Wheel Removal" and I quote, "Press down on horn ring ornament and turn counter clockwise". Sounded to me like the entire horn ring, and the line is so fine it's a bit hard to see a seam, so thought cast as one piece. It's a pretty vague book, at best, isn't it? And approaching delicate, expensive jewelry in such good shape... Wasn't trying to be an oaf with it, and most of the times google seaches come up nada. Along with that *^&$@# manual.

Thank you mstrug(peace, bro, ty), Lancer Mike, and finjunkie, for all the time, help, and the outstanding pictorial, fin!!!! My Desoto thanks ya, and so do I!!

Looks like I am up to almost a 12 pack of owed beers, in only a few weeks time.

You will laugh about this later. I have my own set of "Mr. Obvious"
funny stories from when I was green about these. I think
everybody does.
