Hello everyone,
Today I changed the oil and filter in my 58 Coronet 325, and upon startup inspection I found oil leaking around the canister bolt. I have wondered in the past what formed the canister to bolt seal, and upon disassembly I found the remains of a deteriorated seal of some sort under the flanged bolt head. The bolt shank has a shallow machined groove just under the head, and I used a 1/2 x 11/16" 0-ring and it worked fine. Does anyone know what the correct seal is for this? I suspect most Forwardlooks are still running with this near-60 year old seal in this location! Thanks in advance, Mark

I saw a 55 Royal Lancer 2dr with the 270 Super Red Ram hemi (valve covers had the embossed Super Red Ram, not a decal) today that has a spin on conversion oil filter. Anybody know about these?

Thanks. I see they have several adapters. Stock 30 deg, forward, vertical and remote. I am liking the vertical but they say:

"Vertical Oil Filter Mount This aluminum filter mount places a modern oil filter straight down for clean oil changes. The adapter requires 3 1/2" side clearance from block and uses Chrysler and Ford spin-on filters. Includes gasket and stainless steel fasteners. (will not fit with #26500 trans adapter)"

The verticle one will probably inferfere with torsion bars, did on my '60 Plym when I dropped the 331 in it. The OEM up angle adaptor solved that.

I installed the 30° on my '57 Dodge 325, clears everything. I don't think the vertical would clear the exhaust head pipe.

Wow, no one has encountered this leak before? I'm completely aware of the spin on conversions but prefer to keep my car original, and every major filter manufacturer makes a filter for this application, and I only change the oil filter every three years or so anyway......anyone?

I am not sure if a) adding a spin-on filter takes away anything from the originality of the car or b) whether changing the oil once every three years is a good thing (I am pretty sure it is a bad idea).

That said based on the diagram below from a 56 Dodge parts manual, I think that the seal you seek is part of the filter cartridge, i.e. the very top of the cartridge should have a soft compliant rubber bit to perform the seal that you want.

Thanks for the reply, but no, the seal is under the bolt head at the top of the canister. Remember the canister has full oil pressure inside and the bolt spins freely, independent of the canister rotating. Something has to form a seal.

Agree but I think the seal is the rubber on the top of the canister. If there was another seal, I am quite sure that would show up in that parts diagram. But it doesn't.

D500 boy, I agree on the lack of seal in the diagram. Funny thing, ive owned and driven this car for 40 years, my grandfather purchased it new. Had quite a few filters of different manufacturers in it and every one is designed differently with regards to the seals on each end. Just installed a Wix and it uses a paper gasket with no rubber seal included. I'll take a close look at my FSM tomorrow. Thanks again for the reply!

The reason the seal in question doesn't show in the diagram is because it's a component of the canister. There is also a spring and plate inside that isn't illustrated. It's not intended to be a replaceable component of the canister. Back in the day if anything was wrong with the canister, such as a leak, one would simply order a new canister.
My leak is solved; I'm simply asking if anyone has ever experienced a leak and what their solution was.

You are correct in putting a seal under the bolt head, I just don't remember if it was a flat fiber washer or an o-ring originally. Most canister type filter cartridges come with all the needed gaskets. The rubber gasket on the top of the filter pictured above is there to make sure all the oil flows through the filter, not around it.

Thanks 58 coupe, upon removal and inspection of the leak area, I pulled out what appeared to be a fiber ring, in two pieces. The bolt shank just under the head has a machined groove, as well, leading me to believe the washer fit that groove. Again, a 1/2 inch by 11/16 inch o ring worked fine.Thanks to all for the replies!
