Ok. getting the girl on the road and quickly concluding this 270 is pretty darn tired. burning lots of oil. looking into engine swaps. i eventually plan to do a full drive train swap, but for the time being it looks like i'm in the market for a running 318 or comparable small block that would be easy to install without any major mods. I'm new to mopar, so this is a learning process. I saw from a different post that some of you say up to 61 any of the small blocks will be plug and play for my stock transmission, but the car in question was a 57 in that particular post. I don't want to make any assumptions. I've done engine swaps before, so the process isn't foreign to me. Just want to be sure bolt patterns and motor mounts will work. Anything beyond that will have to wait till spring when I do the full drive train swap.

Any thoughts, folks?

I am going to do very similar project on my '56 Canadian Dodge which is a Plymouth, and I have accumulated the parts.

I am sure the 318 has been done many times but finding info is not that easy, there is a couple of dead threads on the HAMB

( http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/the-1955-1956-plymouth-a... ) and
( http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1956-plymouth-savoy-engi... )

and at face book (hard for me to read) that has some info
(https://www.facebook.com/groups/519679014781599/?ref=bookmarks )

and also a forum at "Moparts on the web" with many motor mount posts but you have to search for them, in the street rod and tech archive sections.

and Garry Sand has a great blog at
(http://56plymouth.blogspot.ca/search?updated-min=2016-01-01T00:00:00-06:00&updated-max=2017-01-01T00:00:00-06:00&max-results=50 )

I know your just in the planning stages (me to, for years) but I think your idea of doing two engine swaps is wrong, if you do the "temporary" one, never easy as you know, you will not do the other one and probably never be happy with it. Why do the work twice? Decide what you want to end up with and do it the first time.

With out intending to be negative, I have found not much response to 55-56 related car items here or for modification info. . (other than maybe asking for your post to be moved to the modification & performance thread)

What are you going to do for brakes? If new cross member it will effect engine mounts?

A tranny crossover & mount is easy to make if you can weld. Brackets on the frame, 2x4 (or so) square or rectangular stock for the cross piece. Vertical ears from the cross piece to go on either side of the loop type (truck?) tranny mount. Any hemi (except the 51-3 long tail 331s), hemi based Poly, or "A" Poly up through '61 will bolt to your tranny. The real question is what is the best, most practical way to do this. Chances of finding a running engine in decent shape cheap isn't good. Might be better just to get the LA & tranny, fix it up the way you want & do it once. Or overhaul the "temporary" engine & stick with it. Maybe install the compatable engine & overhaul the 270, and, maybe, convert it to Hemi. All those cool multi-carb intakes for the low deck Dodge hemis fit your 270 Poly also!

The hurdle that you face is that the 270 was mounted in the car with a front engine plate. Your frame doesn't have the ears on it to make it easier to mount a different motor in there the standard way. So any transplant is going to require welding new mounts. However, if your 270 motor has the mounting ears on the side of the block, you can build your own side mounts onto your frame with the 270 motor still in the car. That way, you can be sure to get everything in the right place - for an older poly motor. However, keep in mind that if you want to put a non-Dodge hemi motor in there, that you will need to move the motor to the left to make clearance on the right side of the car. Also, if you want to put a newer 318 style motor in there, the mounts are narrower than the 270. But if you weld in flat tabs to the frame in the right location, and at the right height, you can move the mounting holes around to any position you want it to be in. Mark the position on the tabs for the correct location of your 270 motor, and you can easily adjust it for whatever other motor you want to install in there.

The other option is to build a front engine plate for your new motor and mount it in your stock location, but this approach is inferior and doesn't allow you to use typical motor mounts.

I installed late model spool mounts using parts welded to the frame in the OEM location. Besides my time, the cost was about $25, and new spool mounts with brackets were less than $20 from Rockauto.

What are the long term plans? As mentioned, you might be better of going directly to that starting point.
Yes, all of the pre-62 A engines and Hemi/Poly engines (exc 51-53 331) will work, some will shred the oem trans quicker than others and yes, you will need to do some fab work.
Check the links provided as there are some excellent swaps out there.
